JOURNAL ARTICLE

YEAR OF PUBLICATION: 1970

JOURNAL NAME: J Amer Concrete Inst
Volume: 67
ISSUE:10
AURTHORS NAME: GEYMAAYER HG, COXFB

MAIN IDEA
This journal has compiled reports from test programs by various researchers and the idea of the
paper is to use bamboo as a replacement of steel in various structural members. This journal uses
the methods for bamboo reinforcements are the same methods which are used for RCC members.
This journal in detail discusses the use of bamboo concrete reinforcement for beams, columns,
slabs and walls with solved examples and also gives information about type, shape, size of
bamboo to be used wile replacing steel, and it also discusses the area which bamboo will require
to resist the flexural failure in a beam.

METHODOLOGY
1 > Materials used: Bamboo, cement, aggregates
2 > METHODS USED: The methods in this journal article are basically the same
which are used in RCC designing, like for beams existing design for steel
reinforcement beams to equivalent bamboo reinforcement design was used in
example.
MAIN FINDINGS:
Due to low modulus of elasticity of bamboo, flexural members develop cracks. If the cracks are
not tolerated then use steel reinforcement.
Split bamboo performs better than whole culms of bamboo when used as a reinforcement
member.
The same mix designs can be used as would normally be used with steel reinforced concrete.
Concrete slump should be as low as workability will allow. Excess water causes swelling of the
bamboo. High early-strength cement is preferred to minimize cracks caused by swelling of
bamboo when seasoned bamboo cannot be waterproofed.
RECOMANDATIONS

After Analyzing mechanical properties of Bamboo recommendations should be made if bamboo

reinforcement is safe under different loading conditions.
