Mary Summersby
Played by
Toni Collette
Mary Summersby was raised by her single mother until the age of 16, where she was
suddenly invited to take over her family home in the centre of a small village in
Trondelag, Norway. Once she moved in, she began finding herself yearning to be
close to the sea. Since being raised catholic - she believed the trumpets and voices she
heard from the watery depths belonged to that of angels. One night, a creature rose
from the sea to tell Mary that she was to carry the next messiah.

After finding herself pregnant with Joseph, she decided to move and take residence
in the lighthouse on the outskirts of town to ensure they would be as close to the sea
as possible. Throughout the Film, mary is shown reciting hymns and prayers by the
sea until her health begins to take a sour turn. Her teeth and hair begin to fall out
and her only appetite seems to be for that of raw fish. Up until this point she always
appeared very distant and passive towards her son and the supernatural occurrences
that happen around them.
Young
Joseph Summersby
Played by
Jacob Tremblay
From a very young age, Joseph was told by his mother that his father had been a
fishermen who tragically died at sea during a hurricane that had taken out his
fishing ship. However, unbeknownst to him he was not traditionally conceived and
while Mary is his biological mother - there were supernatural components that
allowed him to be conceived in the first place.

From a young age, joseph wasn’t permitted to leave the lighthouse. He wasn’t allowed
to have friends and was homeschooled, where any free-time was spent reading the
bible and reciting prayers and hymns. Despite this, Joseph is an adventurous and
curious creature. Often questioning the science and reason behind life and the
strange behaviour his mother exhibits.
Older
Joseph Summersby
Played by
Ross Lynch
As Joseph grew up and he began to understand more and more of the outside world,
he realized that his upbringing as well as his mothers behavior were quite unnatural.
He grows more confident and explores more and more outside the world of the
lighthouse and their little town. However, he shows massive amounts of empathy
and compassion as his mother’s condition worsens - deciding to stay and help his
weary mother and try to provide for their family.

Over time his spirituality fades and he becomes an atheist - desperate to find the
scientific reasoning behind his mothers deteriorating mind and the whispers
within the sea. In comparison to others his age, he appears very mature and shows a
lot of leadership abilities.
Sandalphon
Played by
Doug Jones
The Archangel goes by many names; Sandalphon, ‫ ָסנְדַ לְפוֹן‬, Σανδαλφών. He was
once the prophet Elijah before he had ‘risen’ and now claims to be a speaker for God
themself. Sandalphon takes on a vaguely humanoid yet monstrous form, being
covered in reeds and barnacles, covered in dark eyes and with various animal heads
resting on their shoulders. They are very blunt and to the point whilst trying to
portray themselves as non-hostile.

This character would ideally be played by none other than the infamous Doug jones
whom is best known for portraying non-human characters. They are most
well-known for their parts as non-human characters in films such as ‘The Shape of
water’, ‘Hellboy’, ‘Pan's Labyrinth’, and even ‘Star Trek’.
