INVICTUS

Out of the night that covers me,

Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance

I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears

Looms but the horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,

How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

WILLIAM ERNEST HENLEY

6. What do you think about Mandela´s strategy to join their country?

To this end, Mandela focuses his attention on the South African rugby team, known as
"Springboks". to support opponents, something he remembered that he also did when he was
in prison. To unite a country
symbolizing the cause against the segregationist regime. Their individual destiny was so
closely identified with that of their black compatriots that their liberation embodied the
triumph of the movement against white oppression.

7. Mention at least one event that films show that rugbies sport makes people
forget their differences.

On June 24, 1995 at the Ellis Park stadium in Johannesburg the miracle happened. With an
entire country devoted to their national team, the 'Springboks' broke all the odds to win the
tournament's favorite, New Zealand. After a heart attack extension, a 'drop' by Joel Stransky
gave the victory to South Africa. The images that were seen that day in South Africa proved
Mandela right. People who had never celebrated a 'Springboks' victory took to the streets to
shout for joy and white fans waved the South African constitutional flag down the streets of
South African cities.
The image of Mandela in the 'Springboks' shirt delivering the world champion cup to Pienaar
South Africa will always be engraved in history as a demonstration of the power of sport,
capable of turning a divided country into a united nation in joy. "We have not won for the
60,000 fans in the stadium, we have won for the 43 million South Africans," said Pienaar.
