LESSON PLAN FOR DISCUS

Equipment Aims

• 3-5 discii (more the better) • Understand the grip


• A large grass area • Complete a standing throw competently
• Tape measure • Learn the basics of the spin

ACTIVITY ORGANISATION TIME


GRIP AND RELEASE Line athletes up in pairs opposite each other no more than ten 10 min
metres apart. Remind them about the safety aspects of the discus.
The discus should be placed in the palm of the left hand and the
right hand (throwing hand) placed on top. The fingers of the right
hand should be spread evenly but not stretched across the discus.
The first joints of the fingers are turned over the rim of the
discus. The students should then roll the discus off the index finger
as it is when throwing. The discus should roll straight between the
two students. Complete 5 times.

WARM UP Complete 3 runs over 30m getting quicker each time. Pair up with 5 min
another student and with soccer balls, stand side on, keep arms
long, and throw to your partner. Repeat three times each side.
Remind the students that they should begin to practice a swinging
action along the actual throw line.

STANDING Stand 3-5 students spread a minimum of 8 metres apart, across a 25-30
THROW PRACTICE straight line. Have them stand at 90º to where they will throw. The min
toes of the front foot (left if right-hander) should be in line with the
heels of the rear foot. Using the legs the student should rotate the
body to the back of the circle keeping the arm long and as far
behind as possible. Then move into the throw moving the hips,
shoulders and then arm until the release (as per above). Complete
until competency occurs (5+ throws). Once all released, all to
collect and pass to next student to complete.
COOL DOWN Students should stretch shoulders, back and legs as a warm down. 5 min
