Izod Impact Test

Aim: To determine the impact value of given specimen.

Apparatus: Izod impact testing machine, standard test specimens

Theory:

Impact test signifies toughness of material that is the ability of material to absorb
energy during plastic deformation.Toughness takes into account both the strength and
ductility of the material. There are two distinct type of toughness mechanism and in this
case it is appropriate to consider notch as a very high local stress concentration.

Impact testing machine consists of a pendulum suspended from a short shaft that
rotates in ball bearing and swings midway between two rigid upright stands supported on
a rigid base near the bottom of which are the specimen supports anvils. The knife-edge or
striking edge is slightly rounded. The pendulum can be raised to any desired height and
rested at that position. It is supported in the starting position by a catch and can be
released by a trigger. The mechanism is so designed that the pendulum is not disturbed
when the catch is released.

Procedure:

1. First We select the material with the given specification on the simulator
1) Cast Iron :
• Length (L) = 76.4 mm
• Breadth (B) = 9.4 mm
• Depth (D) = 9.16 mm
• Depth of the notch (N) = 2 mm
2) Mild Steel:
• Length (L) = 76.2 mm
• Breadth (B) = 9.6 mm
• Depth (D) = 9.23 mm
• Depth of the notch (N) = 5 mm

2. Adjust the pointer of the dial at 164 joules. And tested for the friction loss
3. Then the specimen was placed and the pendulum was released on the simulator
, which then swings and breaks the specimen.
4. We then calculated the total loss of energy also the energy for the failure of specimen.
5. We performed 3 trails for each type of material (cast iron, Mild steel).
6. The steps 1-4 were repeated for every trail of both the Materials.

Observation:

Fig 1:Observation table for Cast Iron

Fig 2:Observation table for Mild Steel

Result:
We were able to successfully perform the experiment of the izod impact test where we
tested the cast iron and mild steel material and calculated the total loss of energy and energy
for failure of specimen.
