PART 1: PERSONAL BELIEFS
AND CLASSROOM
MANAGEMENT STYLE

5
PERSONAL BELIEFS

Harry Wong’s Management plan

• Harry Wong's Classroom management plan is based

around building procedures for all parts of the daily class

schedule. “Effective teachers manage their classroom;

ineffective teachers discipline their classroom” (Wong,

2014, p.9)
Jim Fay’s Love and Logic
• A major component of Jim Fay’s “Love and Logic” is
giving the students choices, so they feel in charge of their
own learning. This model also requires teachers to show
empathy to students when disciplining through
empathetic statements (Fay, n.d)

6
IMPLICATION OF WONG AND
LOVE AND LOGIC

Wong application
• I will be implementing the procedures of Harry Wong from his book The Classroom

Management Book. These procedures will guide instruction and allow me to maximize

the learning time I have with the students. Each day when the students come into class,

they will move their attendance marker, put away materials and complete the morning

bell work. The morning routine will look the same every single day. This will allow for

students to know what to expect the moment they walk into the classroom and allows

me to maximize their learning time (Wong, 2014).

Love and Logic application

• I will be utilizing “Love and Logic” in my classroom by using it as a tool to guide

discipline issues. When students violate rules in my classroom, I will have the students

meet with me during the first few minutes of recess where I will discuss with them the

consequence they will be receiving and then they will complete an action sheet

acknowledging what they did wrong, why they made that choice, what their

consequence will be and what they will do differently next time. The reason for the

delayed consequence is so I will be able to think of an appropriate punishment and the 7

students will have time to think over their decisions. (Fay, n.d.)
Personality Systematic: In life, I have a certain way of doing things. Once I find the
Traits: best way to complete a task or accomplish a goal, I am going to keep using
that process to complete the task to be efficient. In my classroom, I am
going to have an attendance marker system whereas the student comes
into the classroom and they are going to move their marker to what they
are selecting for their lunch. This allows me to take attendance and gather
hot lunch information using a simple system.

Prepared: I have been described as absurdly punctual. If I have an

appointment, going to class, meeting a friend I am always early and have all
the materials I needed to bring. Before each school day begins, I will have
gathered all my materials, handouts and activities needed for the lesson.

Dependable: Over the past six summers I have worked as a painter

and I have gotten to the point where the boss will take a day off and allow
me to work on my own. I am a dependable and hard worker. In my school I
will be ready and eager to help and assist other teachers, staff and
administrators in whatever they need.

CLASS NORMS

Effort

We will always give 100% effort on all our work.

Self Belief

We will be proud of all the work we complete, and we will

keep working when assignments are difficult.

Respect
All people will treat each other in the way that we hope to
be treated. We will show love, kindness, and grace to each
other.

Classroom Code: On the first day of school the whole class will work
together to form a classroom code. The code will contain guidelines
on how to treat peers, teachers, others in our school and materials in
our classroom. Each student and teacher will sign the classroom code
as a statement of their commitment to the classroom rules.

Why I only included Norms: I designed this classroom management

plan around a 5th grade classroom. 5th graders are going to be the
older students in the building and are developed enough to know
what rules are in place without the rules being explicitly stated. Using 16
norms shows the students that the teacher trust and respects them as
adults.

18
STEP BY STEP BEHAVIORAL PLAN

• The teacher will go to the student and ask them to

come to the teacher's desk for a meeting for the first
five minuets of recess (delayed consequence).
• During the meeting, the teacher will ask the student
what rules or norms they broke.
• The teacher and student will discuss the punishment. In
minor violation the teacher will ask the student what
their punishment will be, but in severe or repeated
violations the teacher will give the punishment
• The teacher will have the student complete an action

24
CLASSROOM ARRANGEMENT

The student’s desks or tables are going to be arranged in table groups of four.
One key part of my classroom management plan is creating a family environment and
in order to do that students need to be able to communicate with each other. I
believe students learn content better when working with others to solve problems.
This also helps builds communication skills with each other.
I designed this classroom, so the teacher has room to walk around the entire
classroom and observe students. This allows the teacher to give informal formative
assessments, where the teacher walks around and observes the students progress.
There is also a large library posted in the back of the classroom where
students can find and take books to read during their individual reading time. This
also offers an area of alternative seating for students to sit while completing 25
individual work.
FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL SCRIPT
(FIRST 30 MINS)

The teacher will stand at the door and will great each student
- “Good morning, my name is Mr. Oostindie. How are you today? The first thing you are going to do for me is
move your attendance marker to what lunch you brought for the day. Then you can walk around and find
your desk that has your name on it. There is an activity that you can start working on when you sit down.
Thank you”

“Good morning class, My name is Mr. Oostindie. I know that my name be hard to pronounce so you can call
me Mr. O, if that’s easier for you. I am so excited to be your teacher this year, I have been getting this
classroom ready all summer long, so that we can have a great year.

Thank you all for finding your seats, sitting down and working on the handout I gave you. Each day you come
to class we are going to start it like we did today. You are going to move your attendance marker, sit down
quietly at your desk and start working on the bell work. As you can see our attendance marker has a place
for you to choose what type of lunch you are going to be selecting for the day. If you want hot lunch, you
will move it to the hot lunch section and if you are bringing a lunch, you will move it to the lunch from home
section. Make sure you remember to move your marker, otherwise it will look like you are absent for the
day.

You all have been completing a get to know you sheet as your morning work for today. I think its only fair
that you get to know a little bit about me. I have 2 older siblings, I have an older brother named Rob and an
older sister, Autumn. I love playing, watching and coaching sports. I grew up playing baseball, basketball,
soccer, bowling and golf. I'm looking forward to playing some sports with you guys outside during your
recess breaks. I also love Star Wars, watching superhero movies, my favorite super-hero is Iron Man. I also
love going outside, hiking and camping. For the next 5 minuets you can ask me any other questions you have
about me, so ask away!

I want to make this year a special year and one way we are going to do that is building a classroom code. I
thought about making the code before the year began and just having all of you sign it, but I don’t think that
will be as helpful, because this is OUR classroom. For the next 2 minutes, with your table groups, I want you
to produce words, ideas, expression about how you think we should behave in our classroom. After the two
minutes were going to come back together and create our classroom code.

Okay class, can I get a volunteer who is willing to be our scribe for our classroom code.
• The students will then give ideas for the classroom code and after all words a written down, all the 26
students will sign the classroom code.
FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL SCRIPT
(REMAINDER OF DAY ONE)

The teacher will demonstrate the procedures and identify where the
reminders are posted on the classroom walls. Each table group will be
responsible for acting out the correct way and the incorrect way to complete
each procedure. The table group will have 5 mins to plan out their skit and
then perform it for the whole class.
• Bell work procedure
• Where to turn in home-work
• Where to turn in in class assignments
• How to line up for specials, recess and dismissal
• Class discussions

Teacher will lead the class through the name game.

• Go around in a circle
• The first person says their name and creates an action to go with their
name
• The whole class says the name and does the action
• The next student the says their name and does an action
• The whole class then repeats the first student's names and action, then says
the second person’s name. This repeats until the whole class has said their
name.

Snack time:
• The teacher will act out the snack time procedure to students.
• Teacher will dismiss groups who have cleaned off their desks and are seated
quietly 27
• Teacher will play CNN10 video while students eat
FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL SCRIPT

Team Building activities guide instruction until Lunch

• Jeopardy Game (Katie Clugston, p.12)
• Students will play in groups of 4 (table groups)
• Review content from previous years.
• Answer trivia about the teacher
• Preview content for the upcoming year (bonus points
• 20 Questions game
• Teacher picks the first word
• Introduce student sticks
• Teacher selects two students to pick the next word
• Lunch Break Procedure
• Teacher models lunch break procedure to student
• Teacher reminds students that they must stay in their seat to eat their
lunch and cannot walk around to talk to other friends (Fridays they
can sit anywhere).
• Teacher dismisses students to lineup as their groups are quiet and
have cleaned off their tables
• Students go get hot lunch once all students are lined up
• Students not getting hot lunch go grab their lunches and sit down

28
FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL SCRIPT
(REMAINDER OF DAY ONE)

Afternoon classroom tasks

• The teacher introduces the classroom jobs chart to the classroom
• Jobs include
• Pencil sharpener
• Classroom helper
• Pledge leader
• Line leader
• Attendance checker
• Office runner
• Pet feeder?
• Handout returner(s)
• Comedian (in charge of reading the joke of the day, right after recess)
• Scribe
• Desk cleaner(s)
• Fill in(s)
• Teacher shows the class that they are going to spin the wheel to select which
jobs each students has.
• Each student's name will appear on the wheel generator
• The teacher will say a job, spin the wheel and assign the selected student
to putting the students name tag by the correct job
• As each job gets called the teacher will define the responsibilities of the
student's job and will demonstrate the expectations.
• The teacher will remind the class of hallway walking expectations and tell them
that there are extra eyes on them because they are older students are going to
have higher expectations on them
• The teacher will lead the students to the school assembly.
• After students return the teacher will give the students a take home letter to
their parents which the parents will sign and students will return. 29
FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL SCRIPT
IMPACT ON THE YEAR

• Teaching students the procedures on the first day sets the tone for the
rest of the year. When students are learning on the first day, they know
the teacher means business and that they have a plan for the classroom.
The first few days of school are not for teaching content but getting the
class ready for when the time comes.

• Effective procedures run the classroom. If the students know the

expectations without reminders from the teacher, it gives more time to
instruction and less wasted time.

• Building a classroom contract is a great tool for fostering a healthy

learning environment. Each student takes the time to contribute what they
want the classroom to look like and how they want to be treated by there
peers. By having each of the students sign the contract and having the
contract posted in the classroom the students will be reminded of the
commitment they made to each other.

• Classroom jobs create a sense of family and responsibility. When students

are tasked with keeping some part of the classroom clean or helping with
instruction they are going to buy into their learning (Wong, 2014, pp. 122-
125)

• Team building activities allow the students to get to know each other and
learn how to work with groups. The students are going to be put in
groups or paired with partners every single day for some form of activity.
Some students this will come naturally to, other it may take a bit of an
adjustment period. Students learn well when collaborating with others, 30
practicing in a low stress activity is a great way to build collaboration skills

TRANSITIONS

90 second clear: Students have 90

seconds to clean off their desk, put
away materials, grab materials for the
next class and sit quietly at their desks
when the timer hits zero
Statue Game: Students stand perfectly
still in a circle around the classroom,
while they are waiting for the lunch bell.
The teacher stands in the center of the
circle watching to see if a students
moves and calls out movement when
they see them (Scholastic)
Go Noodle: The teacher will play a Go
Noodle video between subjects for the
students to be able to get up and move
around
Clean Up Clean Up: The teacher will
play a clean up song for 45-60 seconds
and the students must clean their
entire desk area
Color Line up: Dismiss students by
calling a color one at a time
SPONGE TIME

7 Buzz: Students will stand in a circle

and will begin counting by 1. The students
will say buzz on any number that has a 7
in it or is a multiple of 7. if there is a
mistake, the students sits down and this
repeats until there is one students left.

Spelling buzz: The students will stand in

a line, the teacher will give a spelling word
and each students says one letter of the
word, if there is a mistake, the students
sits down and this repeats until there is
one students left.
Flash card mania: The students stand
at their desks and the teacher goes
around the classroom reading off a
question to the students, if they get it
wrong, they sit down, this repeats until
one student is left.
Breathing Break: The teacher leader
the class through a breathing exercise (In
3, hold 3, out 6… repeat)
Hangman: Either the teacher or the
student leader of the week, picks a word
and write out the hangman on the
whiteboard. Students take turn guessing
the letters and the words
SPONGE AND TRANSITION
REASONING

There are two main types of transitions: movement and practical. Movement
transitions allow the student to get up and move around the class. Students spend
too much time sitting inside at their desks. Quick transitions which get the students
to move around which releases excess energy and allows for the class to transition
to a new subject. The other type of transition is practical, practical transitions are to
get the classroom cleaned or the students prepared to go to a new subject or
specials.

Sponge Time activities are a great resource for filling larger amounts of time
that is unforeseen. The sponge time activities I listed are designed to give the
students a break from the content they are learning and to build skills without
them knowing it. Teacher students how to play 7 buzz or Spelling buzz as a sponge
time activity allows the students to still be learning with them thinking they are on
a break.

LETTER TO PARENT

This letter has the parents introduces their own child to the teacher. This is
an opportunity for the parents to share different things about their child.
This also show the parents that the teacher wants to get to know their child
and build a close relationship with their child. This shows the importance of
close family type relationships.

(Teacher Thrive,
2020)

37
LETTER TO PARENT
(DISCIPLINE)

Writing discipline letters home to parents is an unfortunate part of

teaching, it is a part of Love and Logics classroom management
plan. The student and I will be completing an action plan when
discussing their consequence and one of the consequences for
repeated offences is having to write a letter home to their parents.
Out of respect for the parents, I will want to inform them of major
behavioral infractions.

Bold Education
Solutions.
(n.d.).

38
LETTER TO PARENT
(HANDWRITTEN NOTES)

Getting handwritten notes from each parent to give to students is a great

positive encouragement going into state testing. I want my students to know
that I believe they can accomplish great things and it is important for the
students to think that their parents believe they can do it too.

(Jubilee, 2012)

39
PARENT INVITE

I want my classroom to feel like a family and one way to do that is to

bring in their family members. This is a letter home asking parents to
come in and share about their culture or expedience. This is a great way
to build a family environment and to learn and celebrate other cultures.

(Winter, n.d)

40
CLASSROOM NEWSLETTER

Sending a newsletter home keeps the parents in the loop about what is
happening in the classroom. It also gives the parents questions to ask
their children. When parents ask questions to their kids about their
learning, they are able to make more connections and process the
information. Parents are a key part in the education of their own children.
