Lesson Information 1.1

Kinds of Blouse
A blouse is a loose-fitting or close-fitting upper garment that was worn by
women. It is typically gathered at the waist or hips so that it hangs loosely over the
wearer's body. Today, the word most commonly refers to a girl's or woman's dress
shirt. Traditionally, the term has been used to refer to a shirt which blouses out or has
an unmistakably feminine appearance.

A blouse is composed of several types that have been fashionable throughout

the years. The styles for blouses differ in the material used whether cotton, linen,
polyester, and silk. They are also varying in the types of collars used such as
convertible, peter pan, mandarin and others but more often, a blouse is named
according to its design. It can be sleeveless or have capped sleeves, puffed sleeves,
or bell sleeves. It may contain feminine details such as darts, pin tucks, ruffles, a tie

or a soft bow at the neck, or embroidered decorations. The following are the common
types of blouses.

1. Button-down. This is the most common

type of blouse. It is usually made of silk
and paired with suits or slacks. It can
also be made of cotton and matched
with jeans, skirts or even shorts.

2. Peasant blouses. This is the traditional

blouse that can be worn by women of
different shapes and sizes and
emphasizes the free-flowing materials.
This is perfect as inner garment for a
professional suit.

3. Wrap blouses. This blouse is made so

that the left and front bodices overlap
and hug the body, often tied in a bow at
the side or back. It is becoming to a small
figure because it can emphasize a small
waist. It looks very elegant and is a good
option for a professional look.
4. Tunic blouses. This is typically longer
than a blouse but shorter than a dress.
Both tunics and blouses are upper
garments popular among modern
women's fashion. They come in a
variety of styles and fashions and can
be worn for many occasions. Women
wear them with different garments like
skirts, shorts, pants, etc.

5. Blouson blouses. This blouse has a
band, drawstring, belt or similar closing
at or below the waist, which causes it to
blouse. This conceals a large waistline.

6. Ruffled blouses. This utilizes ruffles as

trimmings. The ruffles may be simple
and may flow down the front of the
blouse, on the ends of the sleeves or at
the neckline. This look great with a pair
of jeans and heels.

7. Butterfly blouses. It is usually rounded

or V-neck often embroidered with extended
flared sleeves. When a transculent fabric is
used, pleated bodice creates a flowing
silhouette.

Types of Fabrics Suited for Ladies Blouse

Fabric is the cloth or textile used in making a blouse or any other garment. It is
important to choose the best quality of the fabric suited for blouses so that the wearer
will be comfortable. Fabric for blouses is selected in consideration to the type of
occasion, weather conditions, and with the type of skirt or pants being paired to.
Blouses are made of many different types of fabrics. In choosing the best material
for the blouse, consider the comfort it provides, the design, the color and ease in
washing and ironing. Here are the different types of fabrics suitable for ladies’ blouse.

Types of Necklines

Neckline is a part of a garment close to the face. Since necklines frame the face,
and one of the most noticeable parts of a garment, care should be done in choosing a
neckline appropriate to the shape of the clients face especially if the shape of the face is
round, triangle or square. Styles of necklines vary from the simplest plain faced neckline,
to the more complex bound neckline, to the tailored front placket opening which must be
stitched with great accuracy. It is best to work on the neckline when only the garment
shoulder seams are joined, so that the neckline can be opened out flat.
Necklines usually make use of straight, curved or combination of straight and
curved lines. From these lines various shapes of necklines can be created. There are
different types of necklines. In choosing which types are sable for you, consider the shape
of the neck and face.

As a beginner in dressmaking, you should know that not all types of garments
that are currently in fashion are the best styles and appropriate to all persons. You
should also know well the effects of colors, shapes, and figures of an individual.

Department of Education • Republic of the Philippines

17
Following are some pointers to consider when choosing the best neckline.

1. For Tall, round Figures. V-shape neckline should be used in order to break the
width of the body as well as the shoulders. Using darker color on heavier parts of
the body is recommended.

2. Figures with Narrow Shoulders. A boat shape neckline is appropriate to add

width to the shoulder. Shoulder pads and shoulder accents can likewise add width.

3. Figures with Wide Shoulders. A V-shaped or long neckline will break the width
of shoulder. Reglan or dolman sleeves may be used.

4. Figures with Short Necks. Use open, V-shaped, boat shaped, round or draped
necklines.

5. Long Neck. Use high collars, scarves, or open chockers for open collars.

Types of Sleeves
Sleeve is the part of a garment that covers the arm, or through which the
arm passes or slips. Sleeves same as with the skirt determine the dress silhouette. It
reduces the dress silhouette to a minimum or make it larger from which an individual
can make use of these characteristics in his/her full advantage. For instance, to
balance a wide hip, you need a little extra width on your shoulder and that is thru
sleeve design.

1. Cap sleeves. A cap sleeve is an

extremely short sleeve that doesn’t
extend very far from the shoulder and
doesn’t go below the armpit. It can
have a gathered, elastic seam or a
loose seam.

2. Puff Sleeves. This is a type of sleeve

that are gathered at the shoulders and
caught in at the cuff to create an
inflated, puffy effect.

3. Balloon sleeves. This is a long, puffed

sleeves that are gathered at the
shoulder and then puffed out and gather
back at the wrist. Sometimes, the sleeve
puffs out lower than the shoulder, but it
is still a full puff rather than a tapered
flare.

Department of Education • Republic of the Philippines

21
4. Butterfly sleeves. Like a bell sleeve,
a butterfly sleeve flares out from the
shoulder, but it usually does not fully
cover the arm.

5. Raglan Sleeve is a sleeve that has an

arm seam inside the shoulder width. It
extends from garment’s neckline, rather
than from the shoulder and this allows
better movement.

6. Bell sleeves. Also called peasant

sleeves, this long sleeve is fitted
around the shoulder and upper arm and
flares out to the wrist, like a bell.

7. Extended Sleeve. This kind of sleeve

is done by extending the shoulder of

garment.

Collars
A collar is a part of a garment which is attached to the neckline by a seam. Collars
are made up and attached to the garment before the underarm is sewn or the sleeves
are set in. Collars are classified according to the way they shape the neckline edge
such as flat collar, rolled collar and standing collar. There are three main methods of
attaching collars:

1. With a collar that is self-neatening. This is always a simple collar with a straight
neck edge, used on a shirt styled neckline
2. With the use of facing, a method suitable for straight or curved collars
3. With the use of a crossway strip, a method generally for curved collars.

Shoulder seams should be stitched and neatened before attaching the collar

Types of Collars
Collar is the part of a shirt, coat, dress, blouse, etc., that encompasses the
neckline of the garment and is sewn permanently to it, often so as to fold or roll over.

Department of Education • Republic of the Philippines

25
1. Flat Collar
Flat collars have neckline curves that are of the same
shape as the neckline of the garment. This allows them to lie
flat on the garment with no roll or stand onto neck. Flat
collars are popular on children’s clothes because children
have short necks. On adult garments they create a youthful
feeling.
2. Convertible Collar
This is collar design worn either close or open. When in
close position, it appears a half rolled attached to the neck line,
when it is in open position, the front of the bodice folds back to
show the reverse side. This collar forms a notched design.
Convertible collar is also called sports collar which provides a
close fit at the back of the neck when open or close. It is very
practical to wear and could be worn admirably under suits, jackets and coats.

3. Rolled Collar
A collar that stands up slightly from the point of attachment
to the neckline of a garment before folding over to lie flat.

4. Peter Pan Collar

A flat collar with rounded ends that meet at the front of
the shirt/blouse.

5. Mandarin Collar
These are Chinese-inspired collars and they are
known for their standing charm. The front of the mandarin
collar might be squared or curved in shape giving the shirt
a close and structured fitting and it fits very snugly around
the neck giving one a very prim look.

Facing and Interfacing

Facing is a piece of fabric used to finish the edges of a garment, usually curved
edges such as necklines and sleeves. There are two kinds of facing, the fitted facing
and the bias facing and to give body and support to garment areas like collar and
folded facing for button and buttonholes, as interfacing can be used.

Department of Education • Republic of the Philippines

28
Fitted Facing

A fitted facing is cut exacty on the same grain as

the edge to be faced. It is usually 2 ½ to 3 inches wide
and even width. Fitted facing are tacked to the garment
only at the seam lines, dart lines, or other structural lines.
Seams of fitted facing should match to the garment
seams.

Bias Facing

A bias facing is a strip of true bias, formed when

fabric is folded along diagonal line where in selvage is
parallel to the crosswise grain called as bias fold. It is
usually a narrow strip of fabic cut on diagonal grain sewn to
the edge of a fabric and turned flat.

Interfacing

Interfacings are special fabrics used to

strengthen or stiffen specific parts of a garment, such
as collar, cuffs, facing and pocket tops. They are made
in light, medium and heavyweight to match the fabric
weights, and can be either fusible or sewn-in. The
latter type is preferable on sheer and fine fabrics where
fusible adhesive might show through the fabric. For
general use, nonwoven interfacings are ideal. For
more advanced work and for tailoring, woven
interfacing is available. On sheer fabric, matching
organza or lawn can be used instead of interfacing.

Applying Interfacing to a Facing:

All Facing requires Interfacing. The interfacing is to give structure to the facing
and to hold it in shape. A fusible interfacing is the best choice and it should be cut on
the same grain as the facing. Choose an interfacing that is lighter in weight than the
main fabric.

1. Armhole Facing
On sleeveless garments, a facing is an excellent way of neatening an armhole
because it is not bulky. The facing is made in the same fabric as the garment
2.Extended Facing
A facing is not always a separate unit. Many garments, especially blouses, feature
what is known as an extended facing, which is where the facing is an extension of the
front of the garment, cut out at the same time.
3. Facing a Slashed Neckline
A slashed V-neckline occurs at either thee center front or the center back
neck edge. It enables a close-fitting neckline to open sufficiently to go over the head.

Body Measurements for Ladies Blouse

Taking accurate body measurements are of vital importance for obtaining best
results in garments construction. Besides good fitting, correct measurements can also

contribute towards saving time in making different kinds of garment. Taking body
measurements is a responsible task, which should be undertaken with great care. For
this purpose, it is important for a dress maker to have adequate knowledge about
correct methods of taking and recording body measurements, equipment required for
it and other important points to be considered in taking the measurements.

Pointers to Consider in Taking Measurements:

1. A good quality measuring tape should be used for taking the body
measurements. The long metal end of the tape is used for taking vertical
measurements and the rounded metal end is used for taking horizontal
measurements.
2. Person giving the measurements should stand straight, but in a natural pose
and preferably in front of a mirror. A well fitted foundation garments should be
worn while giving measurements.
3. Another person is needed to take measurements. Basic lines of the body are
to be taken into consideration while measuring body parts.
4. Before body measurements are taken, a cord or tape is fastened around the
waist and left until all measurements have been completed. The tape should be
kept parallel to the ground while taking girth measurements like bust, waist, hip,
etc.
5. The accuracy of several measurements depends on this exact waistline
location. Add to these measurements the suggested amount of ease.
6. The amount of ease needed varies with the type of fabric used. More ease is
needed for woven fabrics than knits.
7. A proper order and certain sequence should be followed in taking the
measurements to make it more systematic.

Techniques in Cutting Final Pattern

Creating patterns for clothing production is a skilled practice. The detail and
technique behind each pattern ensure that products are made to specification with a
minimal margin of error. In cutting the final pattern, there are always standard
procedures to be followed to avoid mistakes in cutting the pattern which would affect
the shape and style of the blouse.

1. Re- check the measurements and the

seam allowance before cutting the
pattern paper.
2. Cut pattern pieces just along the
cutting lines.
