LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET
GRADE 6 - SCIENCE QUARTER 3

I. Introductory Concept

Throughout history, humans have developed several devices to make work

easier. The most notable of these are known as the "simple machines": the wheel
and axle, the lever, the inclined plane, the pulley, the screw, and the wedge.

II. Learning Skills from the MELCs

• Identify the different types of simple machines.

• Describe the characteristics of simple machines.

III. Activities
Activity 1: Getting to Know Simple Machines

Direction: There are six (6) types of simple machine. Find the six (6) simple
machines in the word matrix. Search horizontally, vertically, diagonally, and
backwards then encircle the words.

Word Guide:

Inclined Plane Lever Pulley

Wedge Screw
Wheel and Axle
Activity 2: Describing Simple Machines

Directions: Match the simple machines in column A with its corresponding definition
in column B.

Column A Column B
a. Made up of a straight rigid
1. Inclined Plane object like a board or a bar
2. Lever that pivots or turns on a
fixed point. The fixed point is
3. Pulley called the fulcrum.
b. It is a flat, slanted surface
4. Screw that works like a ramp that
5. Wedge connects a lower level to a
higher level which makes
6. Wheel and Axle moving and lifting things
easier.
c. It is an object that tapers to
a thin edge which is usually
made of metal or wood.
d. A spiral wrapped around a
center post. When you turn
it, it can lift objects or hold
two objects together.
e. Involves two circular objects
— a larger disc and a
smaller cylinder, both joined
at the center.
f. A wheel that is used with a
cord or rope.

IV. Analysis

Direction: Answer the following questions.

Guide questions:
1. Which simple machine is a bar that pivots or turns on a fixed point?
2. What type of simple machine is an axe?
3. What simple machine has a slanting or sloping surface that connects a lower
level to a higher level?
4. Which simple machine contains a wheel that is used with a cord or a rope?
5. What is the importance of using simple machines?

V. Abstraction

Simple machines are devices that can be used to multiply or augment a force
that we apply, often at the expense of a distance through which we apply the force.
There are six types of simple machines each with unique characteristics. Their
structure and form tell how the machine functions.
VI. Application

Direction: Provide 2 examples of each type of simple machine.
