PREFACE
All praises to God Almighty for helping me complete this Mini Research task with
full ease. Without His help, I might not be able to finish it properly.

Mini Research is structured to fulfill the assignment that has been given for
fluent teaching – learning process. Mini Research is structured for readers adding
insight about The Problem Of The Student In The Reading Comprehension

Hopefully this Mini Research can provide knowledge for readers . There is no
ivory that is not cracked. I am aware that there are still many weaknesses in this Mini
Research, both in terms of material and presentation techniques, given my lack of
knowledge and experience. Therefore, constructive criticism and suggestions are
welcome.

INTRODUCTION
Reading is a skill and there are many strategies to learn reading, and many factors
affect reading comprehension. Reading is a skill and there are many strategies to learn
reading, and many factors affect reading comprehension. The main purpose of reading
is comprehending the text read. There have been many studies about reading, but they
were merely studies which study reading specifically, such as a study about reading
comprehension question types. Reading is one of skills considered important in
language learning and like the other skills, the mastery is influenced by some factors.
This research is an attempt to find out the difficulties faced by students in doing reading
comprehension to find the perfect technique or method to overcome the problem and
answer the research questions (1) what difficulties are faced by students in doing
reading comprehension test? (2) what are the causes of the difficulties? (3) what
methods or learning activities are applicable in the classroom to overcome the
difficulties?. reading consists of four processes, namely: observation of reading symbols,
catching/ understanding of the meanings of reading material, reacting interpretatively
to reading material both positively and negatively, and the final process integrating
what is obtained through reading material with life.

Reading comprehension is considered as one of prominent English skills for learners.


In this skill, students are required to catch some implied and stated information from
the text by interpreting or analyzing the sentences to really get the answers for the
questions. Students have various problems in doing reading comprehension test related
to their level of mastery. Students with rich knowledge of vocabulary will find that
reading comprehension is easy. So will those with good knowledge on grammar. Each
student may face different difficulty from others causing different needs on teaching
methods and learning activities. This study aims to determine the difficulties faced by
students in doing reading comprehension test to decide which methods and learning
activities are applicable in the classroom to enhance their skills.
DISCUSSION

ARTICLE 1 : SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS’ DIFFICULTIES IN


READING COMPREHENSION
The Problem :

1. They did not comprehend the meaning of the vocabullary or they do not
understand the type of text that they were read.
2. Poor vocabulary
3. Their grammar was also inadequate
4. They did not know the meaning of many words in the texts and the texts or
sentences used were long.

The solution :
1. To understand the reading texts the students need to understand the meaning of
words and they also should have good grammar comprehension.
2. The students need to acquire adequate vocabulary and know how to use it
accurately in context in order to overcome their difficulties.

ARTICLE 2 : EFL STUDENTS’ READING COMPREHENSION PROBLEMS:


LINGUISTIC AND NON-LINGUISTIC COMPLEXITIES
The Problem :

1. Sudents noted that lack of cultural knowledge made it difficult for them to
understand texts.
2. The students also remarked that long texts make them tired and this influences
their focus and understanding of texts.
3. They did not have ideas about reading strategies.
4. working memory problems
5. difficulty to connect ideas
6. lack of background knowledge

The Solution :

1. To understand the treading text the student should have good grammar and
vocabullary
2. Student should have idea about reading strategies

Comprehension Final Test

The Problem :
1. The students’ difficulties in reading comprehension test is caused by vocabulary,
especially the limited knowledge or mastery of vocabulary.
2. causes of lack of understanding of grammatical of the words

The Solution :

1. In order to overcome the problems, students propose an interactive learning for


reading activities, both in forms of audio visual and games. Although games are
not proven to improve their ability in mastering vocabulary, it can help them
enjoy the class better resulting a little improvement though it is not significant.

ARTICLE 4 : Reading Comprehension Difficulties Encountered by


English Students of Universitas Islam Riau

The Problem :
1. There is no reading habit for the students, poor reading skill is also one of the
cause students' difficulties in comprehending reading text.
2. The students do not have sufficient background knowledge to understand the
texts
3. The lessons have not been learnt properly and/or they never read a similar text
before.
4. Having poor vocabulary and poor grammar, the students had difficulties in
understanding the texts.

The Solution :

1. In this case, the students need to acquire adequate vocabulary and know how to
use it accurately in context in order to overcome their difficulties.

CONCLUSION

From the research, it can be concluded that all of the students’ difficulties in reading
comprehension test is caused by vocabulary, especially the limited knowledge or
mastery of vocabulary. for the students involve some important aspects such as low
motivation to read that causes there is no reading habit for the students, poor reading
skill is also one of the cause students' difficulties in compnrehending reading text.
Another reason why the students faced difficulties is the students do not have sufficient
background knowledge to understand the texts, the lessons have not been learnt
properly and/or they never read a similar text before. As a result of having poor
vocabulary and poor grammar, the students had difficulties in understanding the texts.
In this case, the students need to acquire adequate vocabulary and know how to use it
accurately in context in order to overcome their difficulties.
