Genesis Chapter 37 ‫אשׁית‬

ִ ‫ְבּ ֵר‬
.‫ כְּ נָﬠַ ן‬,‫בּ ֶא ֶרץ‬--‫יו‬
ְ ‫גוּרי ָא ִב‬
ֵ ‫ ְבּ ֶא ֶרץ ְמ‬,‫ֵשׁב יַﬠֲ קֹ ב‬
ֶ ‫ ַויּ‬  ‫א‬ 1 And Jacob dwelt in the land of his father's sojournings, in the land of
Canaan.

‫שׁנָה ָהיָה רֹﬠֶ ה‬ ָ ‫ﬠֶ ְשׂ ֵרה‬-‫שׁבַ ע‬-‫ן‬ְ ֶ‫יוֹסף בּ‬

ֵ ,‫אלֶּה תֹּ לְ דוֹת יַﬠֲ קֹ ב‬  ‫ב‬
ֵ 2 These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years
old, was feeding the flock with his brethren, being still a lad even with
‫שׁי‬
ֵ ְ‫ נ‬,‫בּנֵי זִ לְ פָּ ה‬-‫ת‬
ְ ‫ְא‬ ֶ ‫בּנֵי ִבלְ ָהה ו‬-‫ת‬
ְ ‫ וְהוּא נַﬠַ ר ֶא‬,‫א ָחיו בַּ צּ ֹאן‬-‫ת‬
ֶ ‫ֶא‬ the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives; and
.‫יהם‬ֶ ‫אֲ ִב‬-‫ ֶאל‬,‫דּבָּ ָתם ָרﬠָ ה‬-‫ת‬
ִ ‫יוֹסף ֶא‬ֵ ‫ָא ִביו; ַויָּבֵ א‬ Joseph brought evil report of them unto their father.

;‫ לוֹ‬,‫זְ ֻקנִ ים הוּא‬-‫בֶ ן‬-‫כִּ י‬--‫בָּ נָיו‬-‫יוֹסף ִמכָּ ל‬-‫ת‬

ֵ ‫ ָא ַהב ֶא‬,‫ִשׂ ָר ֵאל‬
ְ ‫ ְוי‬  ‫ג‬ 3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was
the son of his old age; and he made him a coat of many colours.
.‫ כְּ תֹ נֶת פַּ ִסּים‬,‫שׂה לוֹ‬ ָ ָ‫וְﬠ‬
;‫ אֹ תוֹ‬,‫וַיִּ ְשׂנְ אוּ‬--‫א ָחיו‬-‫ל‬
ֶ ָ‫יהם ִמכּ‬
ֶ ‫אֹ תוֹ ָא ַהב אֲ ִב‬-‫ כִּ י‬,‫וַיִּ ְראוּ ֶא ָחיו‬  ‫ד‬ 4 And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all
his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him.
.‫שׁ ם‬ ָ ְ‫ דַּ ְבּרוֹ ל‬,‫וְל ֹא יָכְ לוּ‬
.‫ ְשׂנ ֹא אֹ תוֹ‬,‫ַיּוֹספוּ עוֹד‬
ִ ‫ ַו ַיּגֵּד לְ ֶא ָחיו; ו‬,‫יוֹסף חֲ לוֹם‬
ֵ ‫ ַויַּחֲ ם‬  ‫ה‬ 5 And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it to his brethren; and they
hated him yet the more.

.‫לָמ ִתּי‬
ְ ‫שׁר ָח‬
ֶ ֲ‫ ַהחֲ לוֹם ַהזֶּ ה א‬,‫נָא‬-‫ ִשׁ ְמעוּ‬ :‫יהם‬
ֶ ֵ‫ אֲ ל‬,‫ֹאמר‬
ֶ ‫וַיּ‬  ‫ו‬ 6 And he said unto them: 'Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have
dreamed:

‫ ו ְִהנֵּה ָק ָמה‬,‫שּׂדֶ ה‬ ָ ‫ ְבּתוֹ ַה‬,‫ו ְִהנֵּה אֲ נ ְַחנוּ ְמ ַאלְּ ִמים אֲ ל ִֻמּים‬  ‫ז‬ 7 for, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf
arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves came round
ָ ‫ ו ִַתּ ְשׁ ַתּחֲ וֶין‬,‫נִ צָּ בָ ה; ו ְִהנֵּה ְתסֻ בֶּ ינָה אֲ לֻמֹּ ֵתיכֶ ם‬-‫ ְוגַם‬,‫אֲ ל ָֻמּ ִתי‬ about, and bowed down to my sheaf.'
.‫לַ אֲ ל ָֻמּ ִתי‬
‫משׁוֹל ִתּ ְמשֹׁל‬-‫ם‬ָ ‫ ִא‬,‫ִתּ ְמ ﬠָ לֵ ינוּ‬ ‫ הֲ ָמ‬,‫ ֶא ָחיו‬,‫ֹאמרוּ לוֹ‬
ְ ‫וַיּ‬  ‫ח‬ 8 And his brethren said to him: 'Shalt thou indeed reign over us? or
shalt thou indeed have dominion over us?' And they hated him yet the
.‫דּבָ ָריו‬-‫ל‬
ְ ַ‫חֲ מֹ ָתיו וְﬠ‬-‫ ﬠַ ל‬,‫ַיּוֹספוּ עוֹד ְשׂנ ֹא אֹ תוֹ‬
ִ ‫בָּ נוּ; ו‬ more for his dreams, and for his words.

‫ ִהנֵּה‬,‫ֹאמר‬
ֶ ‫ְספֵּ ר אֹ תוֹ לְ ֶא ָחיו; וַיּ‬ ַ ‫ ַוי‬,‫ ַויַּחֲ ם עוֹד חֲ לוֹם ַא ֵחר‬  ‫ט‬ 9 And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it to his brethren, and
said: 'Behold, I have dreamed yet a dream: and, behold, the sun and the
,‫שׂר כּוֹכָ ִבים‬ָ ָ‫ְא ַחד ﬠ‬ַ ‫ְהיּ ֵָר ַח ו‬
ַ ‫שּׁ ֶמשׁ ו‬ֶ ‫ ו ְִהנֵּה ַה‬,‫לַמ ִתּי חֲ לוֹם עוֹד‬ ְ ‫ָח‬ moon and eleven stars bowed down to me.'
.‫ִמ ְשׁ ַתּחֲ וִים לִ י‬
‫ֹאמר לוֹ ָמה‬
ֶ ‫ וַיּ‬,‫בּוֹ ָא ִביו‬-‫ וַיִּ גְ ﬠַ ר‬,‫א ָחיו‬-‫ל‬
ֶ ‫ְא‬ֶ ‫ ו‬,‫א ִביו‬-‫ל‬
ָ ‫ְספֵּ ר ֶא‬ ַ ‫ ַוי‬  ‫י‬ 10 And he told it to his father, and to his brethren; and his father
rebuked him, and said unto him: 'What is this dream that thou hast
, ‫ְא ֶחי‬
ַ ‫ אֲ נִ י ו ְִא ְמּ ו‬,‫ הֲ בוֹא נָבוֹא‬ :‫לָמ ָתּ‬
ְ ‫שׁר ָח‬ ֶ ֲ‫ַהחֲ לוֹם ַהזֶּ ה א‬ dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow
.‫ ָא ְרצָ ה‬, ְ‫לְ ִה ְשׁ ַתּחֲ וֹ ת ל‬ down to thee to the earth?'

.‫הדָּ בָ ר‬-‫ת‬
ַ ‫שׁ ַמר ֶא‬
ָ ,‫ְא ִביו‬
ָ ‫ ֶא ָחיו; ו‬,‫בוֹ‬-‫ְקנְ אוּ‬
ַ ‫ ַוי‬  ‫יא‬ 11 And his brethren envied him; but his father kept the saying in mind.

.‫ ִבּ ְשׁכֶ ם‬,‫יהם‬
ֶ ‫צ ֹאן אֲ ִב‬-‫ לִ ְרעוֹת ֶאת‬,‫ ֶא ָחיו‬,‫ ַויֵּלְ כוּ‬  ‫יב‬ 12 And his brethren went to feed their father's flock in Shechem.

,‫לְ כָ ה‬--‫ הֲ לוֹא ַא ֶחי ר ִֹﬠים ִבּ ְשׁכֶ ם‬,‫יוֹסף‬-‫ל‬

ֵ ‫ִשׂ ָר ֵאל ֶא‬
ְ ‫ֹאמר י‬
ֶ ‫וַיּ‬  ‫יג‬ 13 And Israel said unto Joseph: 'Do not thy brethren feed the flock in
Shechem? come, and I will send thee unto them.' And he said to him:
.‫ ִהנֵּנִ י‬,‫ֹאמר לוֹ‬
ֶ ‫יהם; וַיּ‬
ֶ ֵ‫ְא ְשׁלָחֲ אֲ ל‬
ֶ ‫ו‬ 'Here am I.'

,‫שׁלוֹם ַהצּ ֹאן‬-‫ת‬

ְ ‫ְא‬
ֶ ‫שׁלוֹם ַא ֶחי ו‬-‫ת‬ ְ ‫נָא ְר ֵאה ֶא‬- ֶ‫ ל‬,‫ֹאמר לוֹ‬ ֶ ‫וַיּ‬  ‫יד‬ 14 And he said to him: 'Go now, see whether it is well with thy brethren,
and well with the flock; and bring me back word.' So he sent him out of
.‫ ַויָּב ֹא ְשׁכֶ ָמה‬,‫לָחהוּ ֵמﬠֵ ֶמק ֶח ְברוֹן‬
ֵ ‫ דָּ בָ ר; וַיִּ ְשׁ‬,‫וַהֲ ִשׁבֵ נִ י‬ the vale of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.

,‫שּׂדֶ ה; וַיִּ ְשׁ ָאלֵהוּ ָה ִאישׁ לֵ אמֹ ר‬

ָ ַ‫ ו ְִהנֵּה תֹ ﬠֶ ה בּ‬,‫וַיִּ ְמצָ ֵאהוּ ִאישׁ‬  ‫טו‬ 15 And a certain man found him, and, behold, he was wandering in the
field. And the man asked him, saying: 'What seekest thou?'
.‫תּבַ ֵקּשׁ‬-‫ה‬
ְ ‫ַמ‬
‫ ֵאיפֹ ה ֵהם‬,‫נָּא לִ י‬-‫א ַחי ָאנֹ כִ י ְמבַ ֵקּשׁ; ַהגִּ ידָ ה‬-‫ת‬
ַ ‫ ֶא‬,‫ֹאמר‬
ֶ ‫וַיּ‬  ‫טז‬ 16 And he said: 'I seek my brethren. Tell me, I pray thee, where they are
feeding the flock.'
.‫ר ִֹﬠים‬
‫ נֵלְ כָ ה‬,‫שׁ ַמ ְﬠ ִתּי אֹ ְמ ִרים‬
ָ ‫כִּ י‬--‫ נ ְָסעוּ ִמזֶּ ה‬,‫ֹאמר ָה ִאישׁ‬ ֶ ‫וַיּ‬  ‫יז‬ 17 And the man said: 'They are departed hence; for I heard them say:
Let us go to Dothan.' And Joseph went after his brethren, and found
.‫ֹתן‬
ָ ‫ וַיִּ ְמצָ ֵאם ְבּד‬,‫יוֹסף ַא ַחר ֶא ָחיו‬
ֵ ֶ‫ֹת ְינָה; ַויֵּל‬
ָ ‫דּ‬ them in Dothan.

‫ וַיִּ ְתנַכְּ לוּ אֹ תוֹ‬,‫יהם‬

ֶ ֵ‫וּב ֶט ֶרם י ְִק ַרב אֲ ל‬
ְ ;‫ ֵמ ָרחֹ ק‬,‫וַיִּ ְראוּ אֹ תוֹ‬  ‫יח‬ 18 And they saw him afar off, and before he came near unto them, they
conspired against him to slay him.
.‫לַהֲ ִמיתוֹ‬
.‫בָּ א‬--‫ בַּ ﬠַ ל ַהחֲ מוֹת ַהלָּ זֶה‬,‫ ִהנֵּה‬ :‫א ִחיו‬-‫ל‬
ָ ‫ ִאישׁ ֶא‬,‫ֹאמרוּ‬
ְ ‫וַיּ‬  ‫יט‬ 19 And they said one to another: 'Behold, this dreamer cometh.

‫ ַחיָּה‬,‫ְא ַמ ְרנוּ‬
ָ ‫ ו‬,‫ַשׁלִ כֵ הוּ ְבּ ַא ַחד ַהבֹּרוֹת‬
ְ ‫ ְונ‬,‫ַה ְרגֵהוּ‬
ַ ‫וְﬠַ ָתּה לְ כוּ ְונ‬  ‫כ‬ 20 Come now therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into one of
the pits, and we will say: An evil beast hath devoured him; and we shall
.‫יִּ ְהיוּ חֲ מֹ ָתיו‬-‫ ַמה‬,‫לָתהוּ; וְנִ ְר ֶאה‬
ְ ָ‫ָרﬠָ ה אֲ כ‬ see what will become of his dreams.'

.‫ ל ֹא נַכֶּ נּוּ נָפֶ שׁ‬,‫ֹאמר‬

ֶ ‫ ַויּ ִַצּלֵהוּ ִמיָּדָ ם; וַיּ‬,‫וַיִּ ְשׁ ַמע ְראוּבֵ ן‬  ‫כא‬ 21 And Reuben heard it, and delivered him out of their hand; and said:
'Let us not take his life.'

‫ה ְשׁלִ יכוּ אֹ תוֹ‬--‫ם‬

ַ ָ‫ד‬-‫תּ ְשׁ ְפּכוּ‬-‫ל‬
ִ ‫ ַא‬,‫לֵהם ְראוּבֵ ן‬ ֶ ֲ‫ֹאמר א‬
ֶ ‫וַיּ‬  ‫כב‬ 22 And Reuben said unto them: 'Shed no blood; cast him into this pit
that is in the wilderness, but lay no hand upon him'--that he might
‫ ַה ִצּיל‬,‫ לְ ַמﬠַ ן‬ :‫בוֹ‬-‫תּ ְשׁלְ חוּ‬-‫ל‬
ִ ‫ ְויָד ַא‬,‫שׁר בַּ ִמּ ְדבָּ ר‬
ֶ ֲ‫הבּוֹר ַהזֶּ ה א‬-‫ל‬
ַ ‫ֶא‬ deliver him out of their hand, to restore him to his father.
.‫א ִביו‬-‫ל‬
ָ ‫ ֶא‬,‫ לַהֲ ִשׁיבוֹ‬,‫אֹ תוֹ ִמיָּדָ ם‬
‫יוֹסף‬-‫ת‬
ֵ ‫א ָחיו; ַויּ ְַפ ִשׁיטוּ ֶא‬-‫ל‬
ֶ ‫יוֹסף ֶא‬ֵ ‫בָּ א‬-‫שׁר‬ ֶ ֲ‫ כַּ א‬,‫ ַוי ְִהי‬  ‫כג‬ 23 And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that
they stripped Joseph of his coat, the coat of many colours that was on
.‫שׁר ﬠָ לָ יו‬ ֶ ֲ‫כְּ תֹ נֶת ַהפַּ ִסּים א‬-‫ ֶאת‬,‫ֻתּנְ תּוֹ‬ ָ ‫כּ‬-‫ֶאת‬ him;

.‫ ֵאין בּוֹ ָמיִם‬,‫ְהבּוֹר ֵרק‬

ַ ‫ ַהבּ ָֹרה; ו‬,‫ַשׁלִ כוּ אֹ תוֹ‬
ְ ‫ ַויּ‬--‫וַיִּ ָקּחֻ הוּ‬  ‫כד‬ 24 and they took him, and cast him into the pit--and the pit was empty,
there was no water in it.

‫ ו ְִהנֵּה אֹ ְר ַחת‬,‫ֵיהם וַיִּ ְראוּ‬

ֶ ‫ וַיִּ ְשׂאוּ ﬠֵ ינ‬,‫לֶחם‬-‫ל‬
ֶ ָ‫ לֶ אֱ כ‬,‫ֵשׁבוּ‬
ְ ‫ ַויּ‬  ‫כה‬ 25 And they sat down to eat bread; and they lifted up their eyes and
looked, and, behold, a caravan of Ishmaelites came from Gilead, with
--‫וּצ ִרי ָו ט‬
ְ ‫ נְ כ ֹאת‬,‫יהם נֹ ְשׂ ִאים‬ֶ ֵ‫ִשׁ ְמﬠֵ אלִ ים בָּ ָאה ִמגִּ לְ ﬠָ ד; וּגְ ַמלּ‬ ְ ‫י‬ their camels bearing spicery and balm and ladanum, going to carry it
.‫ְמה‬ ָ ‫הוֹריד ִמ ְצ ָרי‬ִ ְ‫ ל‬,‫הוֹלְ כִ ים‬ down to Egypt.

,‫א ִחינוּ‬-‫ת‬
ָ ‫ כִּ י נַהֲ רֹג ֶא‬,‫בֶּ צַ ע‬-‫ ַמה‬ :‫א ָחיו‬-‫ל‬
ֶ ‫ ֶא‬,‫ֹאמר יְהוּדָ ה‬
ֶ ‫וַיּ‬  ‫כו‬ 26 And Judah said unto his brethren: 'What profit is it if we slay our
brother and conceal his blood?
.‫דָּ מוֹ‬-‫ ֶאת‬,‫וְכִ ִסּינוּ‬
‫א ִחינוּ‬-‫י‬
ָ ִ‫ כּ‬,‫בוֹ‬-‫תּ ִהי‬-‫ל‬
ְ ‫ ְויָדֵ נוּ ַא‬,‫לְ כוּ וְנִ ְמכְּ ֶרנּוּ לַ יִּ ְשׁ ְמﬠֵ אלִ ים‬  ‫כז‬ 27 Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and let not our hand be
upon him; for he is our brother, our flesh.' And his brethren hearkened
.‫ ֶא ָחיו‬,‫ הוּא; וַיִּ ְשׁ ְמעוּ‬,‫שׂ ֵרנוּ‬ ָ ‫ְב‬ unto him.

‫יוֹסף‬-‫ת‬
ֵ ‫ וַיִּ ְמ ְשׁכוּ ַויַּﬠֲ לוּ ֶא‬,‫ָשׁים ִמ ְדיָנִ ים סֹ חֲ ִרים‬ ִ ‫ ַויַּﬠַ ְברוּ אֲ נ‬  ‫כח‬ 28 And there passed by Midianites, merchantmen; and they drew and
lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for
;‫ ְבּﬠֶ ְשׂ ִרים כָּ ֶסף‬,‫יוֹסף לַ יִּ ְשׁ ְמﬠֵ אלִ ים‬-‫ת‬
ֵ ‫ וַיִּ ְמכְּ רוּ ֶא‬,‫הבּוֹר‬-‫ן‬ַ ‫ִמ‬ twenty shekels of silver. And they brought Joseph into Egypt.
.‫ְמה‬ ָ ‫ ִמ ְצ ָרי‬,‫יוֹסף‬-‫ת‬
ֵ ‫ַויּ ִָביאוּ ֶא‬
,‫יוֹסף בַּ בּוֹר; וַיִּ ְק ַרע‬-‫ין‬
ֵ ‫ ו ְִהנֵּה ֵא‬,‫הבּוֹר‬-‫ל‬
ַ ‫ָשׁב ְראוּבֵ ן ֶא‬ ָ ‫ ַויּ‬  ‫כט‬ 29 And Reuben returned unto the pit; and, behold, Joseph was not in
the pit; and he rent his clothes.
.‫בּגָדָ יו‬-‫ת‬

.‫בָ א‬-‫ וַאֲ נִ י ָאנָה אֲ נִ י‬,‫ ַהיֶּלֶ ד ֵאינֶנּוּ‬ :‫ֹאמר‬

ַ ‫ וַיּ‬,‫א ָחיו‬-‫ל‬
ֶ ‫ָשׁב ֶא‬
ָ ‫ ַויּ‬  ‫ל‬ 30 And he returned unto his brethren, and said: 'The child is not; and as
for me, whither shall I go?'

‫ וַיִּ ְט ְבּלוּ‬,‫יוֹסף; וַיִּ ְשׁחֲ טוּ ְשׂ ִﬠיר ִﬠזִּ ים‬

ֵ ‫כְּ תֹ נֶת‬-‫ ֶאת‬,‫וַיִּ ְקחוּ‬  ‫לא‬ 31 And they took Joseph's coat, and killed a he-goat, and dipped the
coat in the blood;
.‫הכֻּתֹּ נֶת בַּ דָּ ם‬-‫ת‬
ַ ‫ֶא‬
,‫ֹאמרוּ‬
ְ ‫ וַיּ‬,‫יהם‬ ֶ ‫אֲ ִב‬-‫ ַויּ ִָביאוּ ֶאל‬,‫כְּ תֹ נֶת ַהפַּ ִסּים‬-‫ְשׁלְּ חוּ ֶאת‬
ַ ‫ ַוי‬  ‫לב‬ 32 and they sent the coat of many colours, and they brought it to their
father; and said: 'This have we found. Know now whether it is thy son's
.‫ל ֹא‬-‫אם‬--‫וא‬
ִ ‫ ַהכְּ תֹ נֶת ִבּנְ ִה‬,‫נָא‬-‫ ַהכֶּ ר‬ :‫ז ֹאת ָמצָ אנוּ‬ coat or not.'

,‫לָתהוּ; ָטרֹף טֹ ַרף‬

ְ ָ‫ ַחיָּה ָרﬠָ ה אֲ כ‬,‫ֹאמר כְּ תֹ נֶת ְבּנִ י‬
ֶ ‫ירהּ וַיּ‬
ָ ִ‫ ַויַּכּ‬  ‫לג‬ 33 And he knew it, and said: 'It is my son's coat; an evil beast hath
devoured him; Joseph is without doubt torn in pieces.'
.‫יוֹסף‬ֵ
,‫בּנוֹ‬-‫ל‬
ְ ַ‫שׂק ְבּ ָמ ְתנָיו; וַיִּ ְת ַאבֵּ ל ﬠ‬
ַ ‫ָשׂם‬
ֶ ‫ ַויּ‬,‫וַיִּ ְק ַרע יַﬠֲ קֹ ב ִשׂ ְמ ָתיו‬  ‫לד‬ 34 And Jacob rent his garments, and put sackcloth upon his loins, and
mourned for his son many days.
.‫י ִָמים ַר ִבּים‬
,‫ֹאמר‬
ֶ ‫ וַיּ‬,‫ַחם‬
ֵ ‫ְמ ֵאן לְ ִה ְתנ‬ ָ ‫ ַוי‬,‫בּנֹ ָתיו לְ נַחֲ מוֹ‬-‫ל‬
ְ ָ‫בָּ נָיו וְכ‬-‫ ַויּ ָֻקמוּ כָ ל‬  ‫לה‬ 35 And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he
refused to be comforted; and he said: 'Nay, but I will go down to the
.‫ ָא ִביו‬,‫בּנִ י ָאבֵ ל ְשׁאֹ לָה; ַויּ ְֵבךְּ אֹ תוֹ‬-‫ל‬
