SKINLAD 2:

CLOSE UP- This is the furthest point that we get to see our character and only shows his face,
shoulders and chest. This makes the piece feel very secret and controlling of what they want the
audience to see. We only get to view the top half of what he is wearing which leaves the audience
trying to guess a time period/time of day. We are also focussed on the characters emotions and
facial details of what he is thinking. In this case, it is scary and feels threatening.

EXTREME CLOSE-UP- The audience are allowed to see the emotion and power in Skinlads eyes which
is very scary and gangster-like. The audience get an immediate message that this man isn’t one to be
messed with. The way the actor has showed emotion through his eyes helps to further emphasise
the hardness and power that he harnesses, which when shown close up, makes the audience very
aware of his status.

CAMERA MOVEMENT/JUDDER- The judder gives the effect that this is almost a home movie sort of
filming with no professionalism. It is a purposeful use of camera technique to create an uneasy
balance between the actor and the audience, and it is almost used to mimic the violence of a skinlad.
It creates a tense and unstable foundation for the audience.

RACE- The actor is white British which is stereotypically similar to the skin lads. This actor is a
realistic portrayal of a skinman. Skinlads were very racist which means this casting would have a
powerful truth to it, that as long as you’re white, you’re a right fit for the gang. In Road the skinlad is
a Northerner, where as Skinlad here is a Scot. This skinlad being Scottish may have the effect that
others wouldn’t like him being on Northern territory and would give him a difficult time.

ACCENT- The Scottish accent used for skinlad, gives an aggressive tone to the character, in a way
that hooks the audience on to every last word. The accent definitely gives Skinlad the scary exterior
that we would expect.

CROSS DISOLVE- Cross dissolves are usually used to show a passage of time that has passed. This
interlinks with the idea that Skinlad is being haunted by his past.

SHADOW- The shadow feels really weak and only appears very vaguely in the close up shots. The
whole shadow isn’t fully revealed and at some points has a square shape to it rather than an outline.
This creates a ghostly feel to the performance, as if Skinlad isn’t really there at all, again hinting that
this is a past recreation happening. The shadows fit in with the monochromatic theme with the dark
and mysterious presence.
MONOCHROMATIC- The black and white filter creates a dark and mysterious aroma around the
character and has a harsh contrast with what is heard and what is seen visually. It also makes the
piece feel old as if it were found in a time capsule, possibly one from the 80s. This kind of filter has
the power to create a creeping old time presences for the audience and a motif that reminds them
of their past, and even more something that they had tried to forget in their past.

COSTUME- Skinlads costume is quite casual and could represent a modern time zone or an 80s time
zone. From the shots used, we can see he is wearing a dark coloured polo shirt which feels quite
preppy compared to what skin heads would normally wear. This seems like a purposeful move to
show the audience that even though he is a Skin Head, he isn’t exactly the same, as we find out in his
monologue, as he has taken a non-violent root. His shirt could also represent the location he is in, as
this could be an environmental clothing trend. The fact that the shirt is dark, fits in with the
monochromatic filter used and it one block colour so that the audience don’t get any hidden
messages.

ECHO- The echo at the end is used to highly emphasise his religious experience and how he has used
it to show his changes. However, it also has a darker angle, as it again emphasises this past darkness
as it carries on the loud vibrations of the meditation which are unsettling and almost haunting for
the audience to experience.
