SERVICE LETTER
PRODUCT SUPPORT PROGRAM TO UPDATE
Before or After Failure JOYSTICK SETTINGS ON CERTAIN HYDRAULIC
MINING SHOVELS Cat 6030/6030FS
NOTE: This program must be administrated either before or after failure. In either case
the decision whether to apply the program is made by the dealer.
NOTE: The information supplied in this service letter may not be valid after the
termination date of this program. Do not perform the work outlined in this
Service Letter after the termination date without first contacting your Caterpillar
product analyst.

PROBLEM
It is necessary to update the joystick servo controller settings for functions “swing left” and
“swing right” to minimize likelihood pressure peaks in the swing circuit.
The currently adjusted relatively steep ramp of starting control current (see illustration 1) leads
to a fast response of the swing pump. This may results in pressure peaks above relief valve
setting.
Noncompliance of this service letter increases the risk of premature failures of corresponding
components.

ACTION REQUIRED
Attention: Follow appropriate safety procedures and use personal
protective equipment as required.
NOTE: All steps of the following procedure must be done in a sequence and prior to
recommissioning of the excavator to ensure overall functionality of all parts and
systems.
Update Procedure
1. Park the machine.
2. Shut off the engines. Do not use auto idle mode.
3. Switch on ignition
4. Go to BCS main screen if it is not shown.
5. Hit the button “Setup” (ill.2) on the lower LH side of the screen.
6. Enter first level password in the appearing window and confirm password by hitting the
green hook (ill. 2). The level I window will then appear on the screen (ill. 3).
7. Hit the “Common Setup” button on the lower LH corner on the screen (ill.3). The BCS
Configuration Screen will appear ( ill. 4).
8. The BCS’s software version is displayed as “Program Version” in the top section of the
screen (ill. 4).
9. If the software version displayed is 1.5.0.1 or higher, the software version is not affected
and no further action is required.
10. If software version is lower than 1.5.0.1, the settings must be adjusted:
a. Click on “Setup-Button” on BCS start screen (ill. 5) and enter pass code for
“Service Level 1”
b. On next page choose “Controller” (ill. 6)
c. Click on “Servo Button” (ill. 7) to go into servo controller settings
d. Choose “Settings” in toolbar (ill. 8)
e. if “Factory” is marked (ill. 9a), data must be copied in Mode A area – to do so,
click on copy-icon, afterward on “copy to “Mode A” and “Exit” (ill. 9b).
Attention: this step e.) must be skipped, if either “Mode A”, “Mode B” or “Mode C”
is marked (ill. 9a)
f. To change the settings for swing left function”, select “Swing left” in drop down
menu (ill. 9) and change the following settings under Mode A (ill. 10) or any other

g. Set mode from factory settings to Mode A and click on “Write” to store changes
into “actual settings” (ill. 11). To do so, please confirm in popup window with
“YES” to write new settings to servo controller (ill. 12). Therefore “Service Pass
Code Level 2” (ill. 13) is needed.
h. After finalization, values can be seen in first column for actual values (ill. 14)
i. To change the settings for swing right function, select “Swing right” in drop down
menu and change the following settings under Mode A.
j. Set mode from factory settings to Mode A and click on “Write” to store changes
into “actual settings” (ill. 13). To do so, “Service Pass Code Level 2” is needed.
