Notification of School Activity

Dear Parent/Guardian,
I am writing this letter to inform you that your child will be taking part in the CBA 1 (Classroom
Based Assessment) within the coming weeks. The assignment, ‘Geography in the News’ will be
completed over a three-week period, beginning on the 1st of March with final presentations on
the 22nd of March 2021.
It is a requirement within the Junior Certificate Geography Curriculum for students to complete 2
CBA tasks throughout their studies prior to the formal Junior Certificate examinations. CBA1
takes place in 2nd year while CBA2 occurs in 3rd year. The completion of both CBA assignments
will go towards each students Geography Junior Certificate result with the possibility of
obtaining 10% of their over result from their engagement in the CBA.
Within the Geography CBA1, students must investigate and present their findings on a recent
geographical event related to Plate Tectonics such as an earthquake. Preparation for the CBA
occurs during class time, specifically on Mondays throughout our double lesson. Students will
research their topic under the required headings for the successful completion of the assignment
and they will also complete worksheet activities to assist their progression in the task.
Students will be expected to use the internet to research their chosen geographical event.
Resource videos have been made available to students via the class website to ensure their safety
when navigating through the internet.
