Korea Welcomes the Year of the Ox
On February 12, Koreans will celebrate the Lunar New Year with their family and friends.
The national holiday marks the beginning of the Year of the Ox on the lunar calendar.
The previous cycle of the lunar calendar was the Year of the Rat.
However, few people will be sad to see that tumultuous year
end, as it will be remembered mostly for the coronavirus
The Ox is the second of the twelve animal signs that make up the Chinese zodiac, a
system that has existed for over 2,500 years. According to astrologers, the Ox
represents numerous positive characteristics, such as diligence, strength, gentleness, and
honesty. People born in the Year of the Ox are said to inherently have some or all of
these traits.
On the other hand, astrologers say that those born in the Ox Year can be a lit t le
stubborn and set in their ways. On top of that, they have a tendency to be conservative
and even get overly emotional at times.
The holidays surrounding the Lunar New Year run for four days, from February 11 to 14
necessary to avoid the large family gatherings that would typically take place.
Nevertheless, most Koreans will probably find ways to celebrate the Lunar New Year
while keeping safe. Some will exchange greetings with family members through video
conferencing platforms like Skype or Zoom.
Also, families will still cook and enjoy traditional New Year foods like tteokguk and galbi
