Concept notes with formative activities

Music has always been viewed as a universal language. In the
vast region of Asia, religious music has been a common ground in
uniting people with different languages, cultures, and norms.

SOUTH ASIA
South Asia or Southern Asia is the
southern region of Asia, which is defined
in both geographical and ethno-cultural
terms. The region consists of Afghanistan,
Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan,
Bangladesh, the Maldives and Sri Lanka.
Topographically, it is dominated by the
Indian Plate and defined largely by the Indian Ocean on the south

India is the largest country in South Asia. Its music is as vast as its geographic
location and as large as its demographic population. The music of India reflects
different aspects of Asian culture through its timbre, rhythm, melody, texture, form,
and style. In general, Indian music remains fundamental to the lives of the people of
India as a source of spiritual inspiration, cultural expression, and entertainment.
Music is often involved in their acts, and the storyteller generally sings his tales,
which may be taken from the two epics, the Mahabharata and the Ramayana, or
from the Puranas, the legends that describe the adventures of the incarnations of
God as they rid the world of evil. Sometimes the narrative songs are concerned with
historical characters and describe the wars and the heroic deeds of the regional
rulers. Some storytellers specialize in generally tragic stories of romance and of
lovers.

Many different forms of music can be heard in the cities. Of these, best known in the
West are the classical music of North India (including Pakistan), also called
Hindustani music, and that of South India, also called Karnatak music. Both classical
systems are supported by an extensive body of literature and elaborate musical
theory. Until modern times, classical music was patronized by the princely courts and
to some extent also by wealthy noblemen.

CENTRAL ASIA
Central Asia is a region in Asia which
stretches from the Caspian Sea in the
west to China and Mongolia in the east,
and from Afghanistan and Iran in the
south to Russia in the north. The region
consists of the former Soviet republics of
Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan,
Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan It is also
colloquially referred to as "the stans" as the countries generally considered to be
within the region all have names ending with the Persian suffix "-stan", meaning
"land of". Various neighbouring areas are sometimes also considered part of the
region.
Central Asian music encompasses numerous different musical styles originating
from a large number of sources. Though Pakistan is part of South Asia, its western
part is considered as an extension of Central Asia
.
Pakistan is known for its unique vocals. The distinctive Pakistani sound was formed
with multiple influences not only from various parts of South Asia but it also includes
diverse elements from Central Asia, Persia, Turkey, and the Arab world.
The music of Central Asia is as vast and unique as the many cultures and peoples
who inhabit the region. The variety of musical styles ranges from the systematically
organized classical music of Turkistan to the notated religious chants of Tibetan
Buddhism to the highly varied folk music styles of the region’s numerous ethnic
groups.

WEST ASIA
There are a few major areas that
have contributed so much to
humanity that they are considered to
be cradles of civilization. One of
these is the original cradle, the
region where the first major settled
societies appeared. This region is
West Asia. You know, 'West Asia' -
legends of flying carpets and genies
in bottles, and some of the oldest
systems of math, philosophy, and
astronomy in the world.

Today, many people refer to this region as the Middle East, the mostly Arabic-
speaking nations in between Africa, Asia, and Europe. The term 'Middle East' is
problematic, though, because it sort of implies that Europe is the center of the world.
So, we prefer to just refer to its actual geographic position on the continent to which
it belongs, which is in Western Asia. With traditions that are millennia old, it's really
no surprise that this area has a rich musical heritage.

In general, the music of West Asia is modal. Harmony is not emphasized but rather
includes salient features such as melodic complexity and ornamentation, including ¼
tones and rigorous rhythmic development. West Asian music is commonly used
during:
 Communal worship (in Mosque, Synagogue and Church)
 Mystic rituals (Sufis, Hassidic)
 Life passage events (Weddings, Bar Mitzvas, Bat Mitzvas, Anniversaries)
 Entertainment (Belly Dancing, Folk Dancing)
