Do you regard the Cuban crisis as a success for containment?

The Cuban Missile Crisis was a one-month, four-day encounter between the USA and the Soviet
Union, which intensified into an International crisis when Soviet deployments of comparable
ballistic weapons equaled American missiles in Turkey and Italy in Cuba. The connection is most
alike, reflected the Cold War came to escalating into full-scale nuclear war.

In acknowledging the presence of American Jupiter ballistic missiles in Italy and Turkey and the
failed Bay of Pigs Invasion of 1961, Soviet First Secretary Nikita Khrushchev agreed to Cuba's
application to locate nuclear missiles on the island to prevent future invasion. A deal was
reached throughout a secret meeting between Khrushchev and Cuban Prime Minister Fidel
Castro in July 1962. The construction of several missile launch facilities started later that
summer.

While the 1962 United States elections were initiated, and the White House rejected
commands for months, it neglected dangerous Soviet missiles 140km apart from Florida. The
missile's increase was established when an Air force U-2 spy plane gave clear, detailed evidence
of medium-range R-12 and intermediate-range R-14.

When this was reported to President John F.Kennedy, he assembled a meeting of the nine
members of the National Security Council and five other key advisers in a group known as the
Executive Committee of the National Security Council. After a conference with them, Kennedy
ordered a naval blockade on October 22 to prevent further missiles from reaching Cuba. The
U.S. announced it would not permit offensive weapons to be delivered to Cuba and obliged that
Cuba's weapons be dismantled and returned to the Soviet Union.

The USA was under pressure, and they had five responses to the missiles in Cuba: do nothing,
blockade, airstrike, invasion, U.N.and diplomatic pressure. President John F. Kennedy did not
want war; however, his military did, but since Kennedy was in charge, they had to do what he
said; he concluded as if war were to happen, the world would no longer exist, so he did not
want to Invade and cause an airstrike which would be an act of war, he also wanted to do
nothing since the pressure will build up more to the USA. The only options he had left were
Blockade and U.N. diplomatic pressure.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy commanded a U.S. naval blockade of Cuba after U.S. spy
planes found Soviet missiles on the Communist-ruled island. In a televised lecture, the
president said the medium-range nuclear weapons displayed at nearly developed bases could
strike larger American cities, including Washington. The president said the United States would
not forbid using military strength to stop what he called a "clandestine, reckless and
provocative threat to world peace." Toward the next six days, it threatened to press a nuclear
war between the world's two superpowers. The Joint Chiefs of Staff, who had warned Kennedy
to order a "surgical" hit to take out the weapons, put U.S. military forces global on DEFCON 2,
which was the highest military alert ever approached the postwar period.

Adlai Stevenson, who was the U.S. ambassador, was one of the most important men of the
Cuban Missile crisis due to showing the world what the Soviets was doing in Cuba; Valerian
Zorin, who was the Soviet ambassador, was neglecting what Adlai Stevenson was saying about
the Soviets putting missiles in Cuba. However, Adlai had proof of what the Soviets were doing
since they sent two American pilots on a suicide mission to fly over Cuba with jets since they
are the fastest planes. The pilots got a picture of the Soviets with armed weapons and missiles
in Cuba, which Adlai showed at the U.N. conference. At this point, the U.S. had world support
against the Russians.

Later after several days of anxious discussions, an alliance was reached among Kennedy and
Khrushchev. Publicly, the Soviets would destroy their offensive missiles in Cuba and return
them to the Soviet Union, directed to United Nations verification, in trade for a U.S. public
statement and compromise not to invade Cuba again. Privately, the United States accepted that
it would destroy all of the Jupiter MRBMs, which was placed in Turkey against the Soviet Union.
There has been discussion on whether or not Italy was added to the agreement as well.
