Title of the Module: NORMALITY, PARTS PER MILLION AND PARTS PER BILLION

Overview:
Normality in chemistry is one of the expressions used to measure the concentration of a solution.
It is abbreviated as ‘N’ and is sometimes referred to as the equivalent concentration of a solution.
It is mainly used as a measure of reactive species in a solution and during titration reactions or
particularly in situations involving acid-base chemistry.

As per the standard definition, normality is described as the number of gram or mole equivalents
of solute present in one litre of a solution. When we say equivalent, it is the number of moles of
reactive units in a compound

Parts per million (ppm) is the number of units of mass of a contaminant per million units of total
mass. More: ppm (or ppmm) is used to measure the concentration of a contaminant in soils and
sediments. In that case 1 ppm equals 1 mg of substance per kg of solid (mg/kg).

PPB stands for parts per billion. One part per billion is one part of solute per one billion parts
solvent. PPB is a commonly used unit of concentration for very small values. The "parts per"
notation is not part of the SI system of units. The notation describes dimensionless quantities.
The ppb notation is most often seen in physics and engineering. In chemistry, the use of SI-
compliant units is encouraged.

Learning Outcomes (LOs):

• Described normality as expression of concentrations;

• Described parts per million and parts per billion
• Calculated normality in chemistry;
• Calculated the parts per million and parts per billion;
• Realized the importance of these concentrations of solutions

Keywords/Concepts:

Mass- is both a property of a physical body and a measure of its resistance to acceleration when
a net force is applied.
Million- number equivalent to the product of a thousand and a thousand; 1,000,000 or 106.
Billion- the number equivalent to the product of a thousand and a million; 1,000,000,000 or 109.
Equivalent- equal in value, amount, function, meaning, etc.
Volume- is the quantity of three-dimensional space enclosed by a closed surface, for example,
the space that a substance (solid, liquid, gas, or plasma) or shape occupies or contains.
