I CAN’T STOP LOVING YOU— Don Gibson, arr. Quincy Jones
“I Can’t Stop Loving You” was written by country singer/songwriter Don Gibson in 1957. At the
time of Gibson’s death in 2003, the song had been covered by over 700 artists – most notably, Ray
Charles who covered the song on his 1962 album, Modern Sounds in Country and W estern Music.
Brazoswood
Charles’ version would go on to reach #1 in both the United States and the U.K.
Quincy Delight Jones Jr. (born March 14, 1933) is an American record producer, multi-
instrumentalist, songwriter, composer, arranger, and film / television producer. His career spans
over 60 years in the entertainment industry with a record 80 Grammy Award nominations, 28
Grammy Awards, and a Grammy Legend Award in 1992.
Jones came to prominence in the 1950s as a jazz arranger and conductor, before moving on to work
in pop music and film scores. In 1957 he settled in Paris, where he studied composition and
theory with Nadia Boulanger and Olivier Messiaen. In 2013, Jones was inducted into the Rock &
Roll Hall of Fame, and was named by Time magazine to be one of the most influential jazz
musicians of the 20th century.
Jones’ arrangement of “I Can’t Stop Loving You”, recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra,
received the Grammy Award in 1962 for Best Instrumental Arrangement.
BUT BEAUTIFUL— Johnny Burke & Jimmy Van Heusen, arr. Lennie Niehaus
The team of Jimmy Van Heusen and Johnny Burke created some of the most popular songs of the
1940s. Most notably, they collaborated in writing songs for Hollywood musicals of the era, and
received an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1944. The duo’s biggest hits of the time
were featured in movies starring Bing Crosby, including “But Beautiful” which was featured in the
movie Road to Rio. Renditions of the song by Crosby, as well as by Frank Sinatra would be top 20
hits in 1948.
Lennie Niehaus began his career with the Stan Kenton Orchestra in 1951, and toured with the band
for six months before he was drafted into the Army in 1952. After being discharged in 1954, he
rejoined Kenton for five years as the lead alto saxophonist. He composed and arranged extensively
for the Kenton band, being a feature soloist and having numerous arrangements featured on
Kenton's Capitol Records releases. He had the longest and most recorded tenure of any of the lead
alto players with the group. Niehaus left the Kenton orchestra as an instrumentalist in 1959 to
pursue music composition in the studios. He would continue to serve as a staff arranger for Kenton
into the 1960s while writing and arranging music for acts such as the King Sisters, Mel
Tormé, Dean Martin, and Carol Burnett.
This arrangement of “But Beautiful” was featured on Kenton’s 1961 album, Sophisticated
Approach, featuring 18 standard ballads, all arranged by Niehaus.

LEGACY – Gordon Goodwin
A keyboardist and woodwind player, Gordon Goodwin has built a larger-than-life reputation
throughout the music industry for his composing, arranging and playing skills. Ray Charles,
Christina Aguilera, Johnny Mathis, Toni Braxton, John Williams, Natalie Cole, David Foster,
Brazoswood
Sarah Vaughan, Mel Tormé, Brian McKnight and Quincy Jones are just a few of the artists
with whom he has worked. Goodwin has also conducted world-renowned symphony
orchestras in Atlanta, Dallas, Utah, Seattle, Toronto and London. Most famously, Mr.
Goodwin serves as the leader of L.A.’s famous Big Phat Band. The Big Phat Band takes the
big band tradition into the new millennium with a contemporary, highly original sound
featuring Goodwin’s witty, intricate, and hard-swinging compositions in a veritable grab bag
of styles: swing, Latin, blues, classical, rock and more.
A steady, persistent audio diet of the giants of jazz, pop, rock and funk has nourished
Goodwin’s being since childhood. Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Buddy Rich, Thad Jones and
Mel Lewis, Earth, Wind and Fire, and Tower of Power, among many others, filled the well for
the music his band makes today. And like those other bands, Goodwin’s music is nothing less
than astonishing when experienced live. Goodwin’s ability to combine jazz excellence with
any musical style makes his writing appealing to fans across the spectrum. That’s why both
beboppers and headbangers dig Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band.
“Legacy” was commissioned by the Brazoswood High School Band, in honor of Brian
Casey’s retirement after a 31 year career in music education. It received its premiere
performance in 2019 with Mr. Goodwin in attendance as the guest artist. We are honored to
be joined in this performance by Mr. Goodwin, Mr. Casey, and Brazoswood Alumnus Steve
Hunt as we celebrate the amazing legacy of jazz at Brazoswood.
Under the direction of D.J. Eisenhart, The Brazoswood P.M. Jazz Ensemble has participated in multiple jazz
festivals, consistently placing first in competition. Each year, members of this group receive outstanding solo,
section, and scholarship awards. Several students from this program have continued to study jazz at major
universities. In 2019, the P.M Jazz Ensemble was named a national winner in the Mark of Excellence, National
Jazz Honors contest.
D.J. and his wife Jami live in Lake Jackson, with their three children, Callen, Aubri, and Rowen.
A native of College Station, Mr. Casey developed an early love for music thanks to his parents who were avid fans
of classical and jazz idioms. He holds a Bachelor of Music Education from Sam Houston State University and a
Master of Music Degree from the University of Miami. Brian’s wife of 31 years, Beth, is formerly the Director of
Choral Studies for Angleton ISD and now works for Southwest Airlines. Their oldest son Sean performs with the
US Army Jazz Ambassadors, based at Fort Meade, Maryland. Clay, their younger son, is pursuing a Law Degree
from Baylor University.
Even for a successful composer and arranger in Hollywood,
Gordon Goodwin’s numbers are impressive: A 2006 Grammy award for
his instrumental arrangement of “Incredits” from the Pixar film The
Incredibles, three Emmy Awards, and thirteen Grammy nominations.
Brazoswood
artists Arturo Sandoval and Eddie Daniels. It made history as the first
DVD-Audio title to receive two Grammy nominations.
The band’s second album, X X L, was released in 2003, and garnered three
Grammy nominations for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album, Best
Instrumental Composition and Best Instrumental Arrangement while
winning the Surround Sound Award for “Best Made for Surround Sound
Title.” The list of guest artists matched the high quality of the first release
and featured, among others, Johnny Mathis and the incomparable Michael
Brecker.
The Big Phat Band’s third album, The Phat Pack, with guest stars Dianne Reeves, David Sanborn, Eddie Daniels and
Take 6, received a Grammy nomination and spent 31 weeks on the Billboard jazz charts. The Big Phat Band’s
fourth recording, A ct Y our A ge, far outsold every other big band record in its path, and garnered three Grammy
nominations. Produced by acclaimed guitarist Lee Ritenour, it featured a host of terrific guests including Patti
Austin, Chick Corea, Dave Grusin, and Lee Ritenour, plus a special appearance by the late pianist Art Tatum.
Goodwin’s cinematic scoring and orchestration craft can be heard on such films as The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,
Escape to Witch Mountain, Get Smart, Glory Road, National Treasure, The Incredibles, Remember The Titans,
Armageddon, The Majestic, Con Air, Gone In 60 Seconds, Enemy of the State, Star Trek Nemesis and even the
classic cult film A ttack Of The Killer Tomatoes.

to study at some of the top universities in the country, and perform professionally around the world.
Through a close collaboration with Brazosport College, Brazoswood students have had the opportunity to
learn from and perform alongside some of the top performers in the country. In recent years, these guest
