Professional Doctors’ Perspective towards Elder’s Beliefs on

Modern Medicine

Rationale

Different cultures apply various models in perceiving and

interpreting symptoms and illness. These models influence their

decisions to seek medical treatment and services. A key principle

shared by many Asian cultures is a holistic view of health, with

an emphasis on balance and harmony between the individual’s mind,

body, and environment (Trinh- Shevrin, 2009). Studies of health

practices suggest that people originally from rural areas in the

Philippines are more knowledgeable regarding home remedies,

traditional healing techniques, and supernatural ailments,

whereas those coming from the urban areas rely more on Western

medical interventions and over-the-counter medications. However,

healing practices in both groups are utilized simultaneously as

well (Montepio, 1986/1987; Vance, 1999).

Despite improvements in many objective measures of health

over the past decades, most Western countries have seen an

increase in the number of patients with symptom-based illness

without underlying physical disease (e.g. Aylward, 2006; Salmon,

2006).  In particular, beliefs held by patients about their

health and illness are central to the way they present, respond

to treatment and evaluate their capacity for work. However, the

beliefs of relevant healthcare professionals, academics and those

in wider society are clearly important also when understanding

the causes of illness, extent of disability and potential for

treatment (Wade & Halligan, 2004). This article considers the

nature of belief, and why future developments of the

biopsychosocial model need to take account of the beliefs of all

the key players involved (Halligan & Aylward, 2006).

The purpose of this study is to gain information about the

perception of professional doctors’ towards the beliefs of elders

in modern medicine. This study will help people’s understanding

about the elders beliefs in medicine and how could it affect

their treatment.
