COMMON COMPETENCIES
This lesson deals on how to determine areas of concern for safety measures.
It includes identification of work task, place and time for safety measures and
the appropriate tools, materials and outfits to be prepared.
Before starting the day to day tasks, always bear in mind and be guided by
this important reminder, “Use the right tool to complete the job safely, quickly
and efficiently.”
During laboratory period you are expected to spend your time for two hours in
the fishpond or at the fishing area. Before performing the work tasks, the
appropriate tools/ materials and outfit must be prepared beforehand and the
hazards associated to work task are also determined. In this way, you are
able to prepare yourselves for the proper outfit, tools and materials
appropriate to the work task.
Directions:
Exercise 1. Answer the following questions on identifying work task in
fishery operations. You can search through the internet for reference and by

Whenever you perform a task in the farm you must use personal protective
clothing that is appropriate for the task and conforms to your local safety
regulations and policies.

Exercise 1.
1. Pond draining, drying, poisoning, pond bottom leveling, pond liming, pond
fertilization, repair of dikes, screening of water inlet and outlet, filling in of

d. Repairing of gates and screens. Broken or damaged slab and pipes
must be repaired. In doing so, use proper tools to avoid accident.
e. Repairing of dikes. Use digging blade in repairing leakage and
seepages of dikes. Extra care must be observed so that feet will not be
wounded.
f. Predator control. Keep the dikes’ banks clean to control predators like
snakes and frogs. Wear boots, hat and long-sleeved clothes in clearing
the grasses along pond dikes.
Exercise 3.
1. Work clothing- long-sleeved shirts, overalls, life jackets
2. Head/Eye protection- eye glasses, hat, cap, safety goggles
3. Hand/feet protection- barrier cream, hand gloves, boots
4. Respiratory equipment-valve respirator, face mask
Exercise 4.
1. Wear a self-righting Personal Flotation Device or life jacket with a minimum of
93 Newtons (21 pounds) of buoyancy.
2. Wear an approved Personal Flotation Device (PFD) or life jacket.
3. Protective clothing, hand protection, head protection, foot protection, eye and
face protection, hearing protection, and respiratory protection
