ecosystem. Ch.3 L.1

Standard - 3.1.4.A1
Classify plants and animals according to the physical
characteristics that they share.

Activity
The students will be introduced to chapter 3, and the
unit on Ecosystems. The students will learn the new
chapter vocabulary. The students will watch a series of
ecosystem videos to introduce the lesson. The students
will read the Ch. 3 L.1 chapter summary as a follow-up

ecosystem. Ch.3 L. 1

Standard - 3.1.4.A1
Classify plants and animals according to the physical
characteristics that they share.

Activity
The students will complete the questions from the
chapter summary as a class, individually, and in groups
of 2. Then, they will do an activity where they recognize
the differences between ecosystems, communities,
populations, and niches.
Ch.3 L.1

Lesson 3 Begin Lesson 2

Objectives:
TLWBAT understand the relationship among organisms
in aquatic and terrestrial food chains.
TLWBAT understand the need for nutrients and
minerals for living organisms.

need to live.

Standard - 3.1.4.A5
Describe common functions living things share to help
them function in a specific environment.
Activity:
We will review the chapter vocabulary before beginning
the second lesson. The students will read the lesson
summary for lesson 2 as a class, and individually. After
reading and highlighting information in the text, the
students will answer the questions on the back of the
lesson summary individually and with partners.

Lesson 4 Unit Centers

Objectives:
TLWBAT know that most living things use energy from
the sun to live and grow.

TLWBAT understand the relationship among organisms

in aquatic and terrestrial food chains.

TLWBAT understand the patterns of interdependency in

ecological systems.

Standard - 3.1.4.A2
Describe the different resources that plants and animals
need to live.

Standard - 3.1.4.A5
Describe common functions living things share to help
them function in a specific environment.

Activities:
The students will work through 4 different centers based
on the content in lesson 2 of the science unit. Due to
COVID-19, the centers are individual-based
assignments but the students will still move around in
groups of 3 or 4.

The first center is a herbivore, carnivore, omnivore

definition sort that the students will work on individually
on their chromebooks.

The second center is a quick research-based activity

about herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores. This will
also be completed on chromebooks.

The third center is a food chain paper plate activity

where the students will each make their own food chain
of an animal with a paper plate to represent the “chain”.

Each center should take about 8-10 minutes, and the

students should be able to get through them all in one
class period. If not, we will begin Wednesday in science
with finishing the centers.

Lesson 5 Objectives
TLWBAT understand the relationship among organisms
in aquatic and terrestrial food chains.
TLWBAT understand the need for nutrients and
minerals for living organisms.

need to live.

Standard - 3.1.4.A5

them function in a specific environment.

Activity
The students will review the chapter vocabulary very
quickly before beginning lesson 3. The students will
read the lesson 3 summary as a class, as well as
independently. The students will answer the chapter
questions on the back of the summary page. Then, the
students will do the virtual field trip activity, where they
can watch different animals around the world on a
livestream. They will answer questions about what they
watched after viewing the livestreams.
