ENGINEERING MATERIAL SPECIFICATION

Material Name Specification Number

STEEL, SHEET, HOT ROLLED HSLA WSB-M1A215-E1

STEEL, SHEET, COLD ROLLED HSLA WSB-M1A215-F1

1. SCOPE

The materials defined by these specifications are fully killed, fine grained, high strength low alloy
(HSLA) steel sheet possessing good forming and welding properties. The choice of strengthening
mechanism is at the discretion of the supplier and shall be described in the Control Plan.

Specification WSS-M1P94-A shall be used where precoating by the steel supplier is required.

2. APPLICATION

These specifications were originally released for material used in reinforcements, brackets, door
intrusion beams, suspension components, and other body and chassis parts requiring a high
strength to weight ratio.

Caution: Microalloyed steel supplied to WSB-M1A215-E1/F1 may contain titanium as an alloying

addition. Such titanium alloyed steels, if subsequently surface treated by a
nitrocarburising/oxidising process, risk becoming embrittled because of the formation of an ultrafine
TiN precipitate. Microalloyed steels containing vanadium and niobium are also thought to be prone
to this effect. Accordingly, Microalloyed steel should be avoided for parts subjected to the above
noted surface treatment processes.

3. REQUIREMENTS

Material specification requirements are to be used for initial qualification of materials.

3.1 STANDARD REQUIREMENTS FOR PRODUCTION MATERIALS

Material suppliers and part producers must conform to the Company's Standard
Requirements For Production Materials (WSS-M99P1111-A).

3.2 CHEMICAL COMPOSITION (weight percent)

The upper and lower limits of chemical composition of the controlled elements shall be
established by the supplier and be included in the Control Plan.

ENGINEERING MATERIAL SPECIFICATION WSB-M1A215-E1/F1

3.4 THICKNESS AND THICKNESS TOLERANCE (see also para 4.4)

The thickness specified on the Engineering Drawing shall be a minimum.

Unless otherwise specified by Ford via the Engineering Drawing, the SMRL (see para 3.6)
or Purchasing (Supply), the tolerance range on thickness shall comply with half (0.5X) that
stated in the relevant standard for cold rolled material (WSB-M1A215-F1) and three quarters
(0.75X) that stated in the relevant standard for hot rolled material (WSB-M1A215-E1). The
relevant standards are EN10131 (cold rolled material), EN 10051 (hot rolled material),
ASTM A568M (hot rolled and cold rolled material).

3.5 FORMABILITY

The quality level of steel supplied to fabricate a specific component shall be negotiated
between the manufacturing activity and the steel supplier. Acceptance of subsequent
orders by the steel supplier for a given component at the agreed upon quality level implies
that all steel supplied will be of a comparable quality level and will form that part
satisfactorily as defined by the manufacturing activity.

Ford Motor Company may, at its option and in agreement with the steel supplier, compile a

--``,`,,`,```,,```,`,````,,,,``-`-`,,`,,`,`,,`---
list of property requirements such as mechanical properties, forming characteristics and
surface texture, for each specific part. This list will be a mandatory extension of these
specifications. The current responsible area within Ford Europe is Advanced Vehicle
Technology (AVT); Materials Engineering & Testing (ME&T). The current responsible area
within North America is Advanced Technology and Materials Engineering (AT&ME). The
current responsible area within Jaguar is Materials Engineering. The aforementioned list
shall be known as the Sheet Metal Requirement List (SMRL). The SMRL may refer to
National or International Standards.

3.6 WELDABILITY
(FLTM BA 013-04)

The material shall meet the requirements of Ford Resistance Spot Weldability for high
strength steels.

3.7 SURFACE APPEARANCE, CONDITION AND SURFACE ROUGHNESS (Ra)

Some applications of WSB-M1A215-F1 will require the surface appearance to be defined as

Class 1, Class 2, or Class 3 as appropriate:

A Class 1 surface shall be specified for parts of the vehicle that are exposed to view after
paint or trim.

A Class 2 surface shall be specified for parts of the vehicle not covered by trim materials
but exposed to view when the doors or enclosure lids are in an open position.

A Class 3 surface shall be specified for parts of the vehicle that are concealed during
normal use.

Unless otherwise specified by Ford via the Engineering Drawing, the SMRL (see para 3.5)
or Purchase (Supply), these materials shall be coated with Ford approved mill oil or
prelube.

ENGINEERING MATERIAL SPECIFICATION WSB-M1A215-E1/F1

Other than for North America, where the surface appearance is specified, the surface
roughness Ra (to SEP 1940) 2.5 mm cut-off length; 1 micrometer (+ 0.5 micrometer) band
width; 12.5 mm minimum effective traverse length; flat skid type is defined thus:

. Class 1 (also known as "B" (EN 10130) or full finish (FF)): Ra 1.0 - 1.7 (2.5 mm cut-off)
Peak density 45 ppcm (Peak Valley Pairs per centimeter) minimum (at 2.5 mm cut-off).

. Class 2 (also known as "A" (EN 10130) or general purpose (GP)): Ra 1.0 - 2.4 (2.5 mm
cut-off) Peak Density not defined.

. Class 3
Ra and Peak Density not defined.

3.8 PAINTABILITY

Material supplied to these specifications must have prior approval for paintability by the
responsible Materials Engineering activity. This approval shall be based on samples
prepared to the local process and performance requirements appropriate to the country of
vehicle manufacture.

Where the material or component is delivered to Ford in the fully painted condition, this
para is not applicable and the performance defined by the drawing is mandatory. Where
the final product is to be surface coated by other methods, e.g. Electro-plate, a similar
approval procedure applies (see also para 4.5).

4. GENERAL INFORMATION

The information given below is provided for clarification and assistance in meeting the requirements

--``,`,,`,```,,```,`,````,,,,``-`-`,,`,,`,`,,`---
of this specification.

4.1 INITIAL SUPPLIER APPROVAL

(UNCOATED ONLY - For information for coated
HSLA steel submissions see WSS-M1P94-A)

For initial approval, the supplier should furnish the following information for each variant:

. A plan detailing how each requirement of para 3 will be controlled on a continuing

basis.

. Test results from a typical production sample for the requirements outlined in para 3,
with the exception that paintability testing shall be conducted on one sample.

. Weldability test results from production samples as outlined in para 3.6. To control
weldability on an ongoing basis, the Suppliers Control Plan will indicate the maximum
chemistry and minimum gage allowed for each supplier approval submission. These
levels will be negotiated between the appropriate Ford Materials Engineering activity
and the supplier at the time of submission. It is therefore important, where possible,
that samples with higher chemistry and lower gauge be selected for testing.

. Mechanical property histograms including mean and standard deviation values. Data
--``,`,,`,```,,```,`,````,,,,``-`-`,,`,,`,`,,`---

shall consist of a minimum of 40 measurements for each property in para 3.3, taken
from a minimum of 20 coils, while the process is operating in statistical control.

Upon approval, the material will be added to the Engineering Material Approval Source List.

4.2 REFERENCE DOCUMENTS

The reference documents are:

ASTM E 8M EN 10002 ISO 6892 WSS-M1P94-A

ASTM A568M EN 10051 QS-9000 WSS-M99P1111-A
ESB-M2P129-B EN 10131 FLTM BA 013-04 WSS-M99P9999-A1
ESB-M2P130-A

4.3 METHOD OF SPECIFYING

The specification on the Engineering Drawing shall include, if applicable, the surface
quality; also the coating(s), as defined by WSS-M1P94-A.

e.g. Steel, Sheet, Hot Rolled, HSLA, uncoated, minimum yield strength 300 MPa, for a
non-visible component, would be specified thus:

WSB-M1A215-E1
Grade 300: Class 3

e.g. Steel, Sheet, Cold Rolled, HSLA, hot dipped zinc coated, minimum yield strength 350
MPa, for a non-visible component, would be specified thus;

WSB-M1A215-F1, Grade 350; Class 3

Coated to WSS-M1P94-A, 60G60G-HD

4.4 THICKNESS TOLERANCE (CAUTION)

If and when choosing a minimum gage from ES-YC15-1N260-AA, if the previous choice of
gage was nominal, it is important to avoid generating an inadvertent increase in the
ACTUAL thickness of the component, and consideration should be given to specifying the
next lowest minimum gage e.g. (Ford Europe example) for an existing 0.80 mm nominal
gage, the nearest equivalent minimum gage in ES-YC15-1N260-AA is 0.75 mm.

4.5 PAINTABILITY

Material supplied to North America shall meet the following requirements:

. Material intended for Class 1 surface applications shall meet the requirements of ESB-
M2P130-A.

. Material intended for Class 2 and 3 surface applications shall meet the requirements of
ESB-M2P129-B.
