Ryan M. Muldowney has a broad background as both an educator and as a practicing artist. Having been
formally trained as fine artist and as an illustrator, Mr. Muldowney is conversant with traditional,
nontraditional and digital materials and techniques, as well as a battery of image-making methodologies.
Experimentation with interdisciplinary cross-pollination has contributed greatly to his research in the
studio, in addition to heavily informing the configuration of his instructional platform.
From 2002 to 2006 Mr. Muldowney studied at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. He was
awarded numerous substantial awards and honors, including two coveted nominations by the University
of the Arts faculty to participate in elite interdisciplinary competitions. In addition to this, he began
exhibiting his work regularly in the Philadelphia area during his sophomore year. In 2006, Mr.
Muldowney was awarded the MFA Merit Scholarship when he began his graduate work at the
Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and was involved in eleven regional and national shows during
his next two years at the Academy.
Since the completion of his graduate work, Mr. Muldowney has taught at a number of institutions within
higher education including Sheridan College, Tidewater Community College, Southwest Minnesota State
University, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and Middle Tennessee State University. In these
positions, Mr. Muldowney has taught a breadth of courses that include all levels of drawing and painting,
illustration, digital methods, printmaking, and the history of art. He has also distinguished himself in
leadership roles such as Director of an international arts festival, Chair of an Art Program Review
Committee, and he has overseen the interview and hire of art faculty, managed departmental budgets,
written grants to augment program equipment and facilities, and coordinated exhibition programming.
Through all of these experiences, Mr. Muldowney has maintained a focused studio practice, resulting in
both domestic and international gallery and museum exhibitions. In conjunction with his dedication to
the studio, he has developed and delivered lectures coupled with his exhibitions as well as in faculty
lecture programs.
In addition to his academic and studio endeavors, Mr. Muldowney has actively pursued a number of
writing projects that have resulted in the publication of written works of fiction and non-fiction alike.
Further book projects that Mr. Muldowney has underway include a number of children’s books, and a
drawing textbook.
