HISTORY

 First viticulture in Kazakhstan appear during the 7th century AD

Climate and geographical factors of South Kazakhstan and


Almaty regions allow to grow good quality grapes for
wine. There can be found Brown and Grey-Brown Desert
soil types.

GRAPE VARIETIES

 Currently Kazakhstan winemaking has largely focused on


dessert wine production. More than 40 grape varieties are
grown in the country though more than half are currently
used for table grape production rather than winemaking.
 Popular wine grape varieties
include Aligote, Aleatico, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Bayan Shirey Kuljinski
Sauvignon, Pinot noir, Riesling, Rkatsiteli, Saperavi, Muscat
Ottonel, Bayan Shirey, Kuljinski, Maiski Cherny and Rubinovy
Magaracha. In general the grapes are the Georgian ones,
such as Rkatsiteli and Saperavi, found in other parts of the
former Soviet Union. More recently there has been interest
in planting international varieties such as Sauvignon blanc.

WINE REGIONS

 Registered about 58 wineries


 13,000 hectares of vineyards
 About 80% of the country's wines are produced in Almaty region, mountainous part of east
Almaty, and rest of wine production is from Saryagash region of South Kazakhstan with 900
ha of vineyards.
 "New World" technologies including sweeping arm fermenters, air bag presses, cross flow
filtration and nitrogen production.
 It benefits from being 1000 m up in the Tian Shan mountains
 Other wineries include Bacchus and the Turgen Winery. There are 210 hectares of vineyards
in the Zailiyskiy region of the Almaty region.

COVID-19 IMPACT

 On-trade volume sales of wine are expected to fall by 40% in 2020, in light
of the impact of COVID-19.

 This contrasts vividly with the 3% rise forecast for 2020 during research
conducted in May 2019, ie before the spread of COVID-19.
