The Collins TDR-94 Transponder unit have been updated by Rockwell Collins
Service Bulletins to meet the performance requirements specified in TSO C166b for
1090ES equipment operating on 1090Mhz, TSO C112d, and TSO c169a and
RTCA/DO-260B Minimum Operational Performance Standards(MOPS) for ADS-B
Out and also DO-181E MOPS for ATCRBS/Mode S equipment.
SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

ADS-B Out is a function for airborne or surface aircraft that transmits its state vector
(horizontal and vertical position, horizontal and vertical velocity) and other aircraft
information. ADS-B is automatic because no external stimulus is required. ADS—B
is dependent because it relies on the “on-board” GPS WAAS navigation source and
the installed Transponder to broadcast surveillance information to ATC and other
aircraft in the airspace. The aircraft originating the broadcast may or may not have
knowledge of which users are receiving its broadcast. Any user within range may
choose to receive and process the ADS-B surveillance information. ADS-B supports
improved use of airspace, reduced ceiling/visibility restrictions, improved surface
surveillance, and enhanced safety such as conflict management.

The 1090 MHz ADS-B system uses the Mode S Extended Squitter to broadcast the
aircraft/vehicle position, intent and other relevant information over the Transponder
Extended Squitter once every second.

In this implementation, the transponder transmits ADS-B messages only. The

transponder does not have the ability to receive ADS-B information, such as ADS-B
messages from other aircraft or Traffic Information Services-Broadcast (TIS-B), and
Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Rebroadcast (ADS-R) from the ground
infraestructure.

1. TRANSPONDER TDR 94

Transponder system installation has one transponder, a single control with

Aeronautical Radio Incorporated (ARINC) 429 data format, a single antenna, and
some type of altitude source is necessary in addition to GPS signal.

1.1. Antenna

Flush-mounted antenna is installed under the transition section behind the UHF-
COMM antenna. This receive signals. The TDR 94 is a non-diversity transponder,

1.4. Control and Functions

1.4.1. CTL 92E

CONTROL OR INDICATOR FUNCTION/ DESCRIPTION

Upper display window The ATC code (the reply code currently
selected for the active transponder) is
displayed. See self-test display below
for additional description.
Lower display window The lower display window is used only
during self-test. See self-test display
below for additional description.
Compare annunciator ACT momentarily illuminates when
codes are being changed. If ACT
flashes, the actual reply code is not
identical to the code shown in the active
code display.
Annunciators The ATC control contains a RMT
(remote) annunciator and a TX

(transmit) annunciator. The RMT

annunciator may or may not illuminate
depending on the installation. If
strapped for illumination, it will
illuminate when an external switch
(LOCAL/REMOTE or similar) is in the
REMOTE position. This indicates that
the transponder is being tuned by
another control unit (Gray code format,
for example). The code displayed in the
upper window is the current active code
being sent by the remote source to the
CTL-92E. The RMT annunciator will not
illuminate when the transponder is
being turned by a Flight Management
System (FMS) or similar system. An
FMS simply tunes the CTL-92E just like
the CODE select knobs do, and the
control then tunes the transponder. All
controls on the CTL-92E remain
operational when an FMS is being used
to tune the transponder. The TX
annunciator illuminates when the TDR-
94D replies to an interrogation.
Power and mode switch: The ATC control power and mode
switch contain five positions. The
positions are OFF/STBY/ON/ALT/FID
for the CTL-92E.
OFF Controls without the OFF position will
normally have their power controlled by
an avionics master switch. Controls with
the OFF position will switch system
power off when OFF is selected. Power
is applied when any other switch
position is selected. At the same
time,+28 V DC voltage is output via J1-
25 to control a remote power switching
relay for the Transmitter-Receiver.
STBY In the STBY mode, power is applied to
the transponder but it is prevented from

transmitting replies. STBY should be

used only during ground movement or
when requested by ATC.
ON The ON position deletes the altitude
code and is normally used when
requested by ATC.
ALT The ALT position is the normal
operating position and allows the
transponder to reply to the ground
interrogations; it also transmits
uncorrected barometric altitude when
the transponders are interrogated in
Mode C. This position should be used
only if the aircraft is equipped with an
encoding altimeter or a central air data
system.
FID The FID position is used to set the eight
characters of the Flight ID number. The
current Flight ID is shown as two lines of
four characters each on the Light
Emitting Diode (LED) display.
Light sensor The built-in light sensor automatically
controls the display brightness.
Code-select knobs: Two concentric knobs control the active
ATC and FID code displays.
ATC code display The larger knob changes the two
significant digits, and the smaller knob
changes the two less significant digits.
The least significant digit is incremented
or decremented for each detent of the
smaller knob if the knob is turned slowly.
Rapid rotation of either knob will cause
changes proportional to the rate of
rotation. Rollover of the less significant
digits will occur at 0 and 7, and will
cause the more significant digits to be
incremented or decremented. The left
two digits and the right two digits are
independent of each other. The various
codes used for normal operation are

Manual. Codes 7600 or 7700 are
selected for in-flight emergency
operation and will be annunciated by the
codes flashing in the active code display
for a few seconds before transmission
begins.
FID code display Turn the Mode switch to the FID position
to show the Flight ID number as
described above. The larger Code
select knob positions a blinking cursor
over one of the eight characters of the
Flight ID Code. This allows the selected
character to be changed. The smaller
Code se-lect knob changes the
character under the blinking cursor.
Clockwise rotation of the smaller knob
changes the character in the sequence
that follows: Blank, 0-9, and A-Z.
PRE button Push and hold the PRE button while
turning the code-select knobs to select
a preset code for storage. The preset
code will be stored in nonvolatile
memory and can be recalled by
momentarily pushing the PRE button
again.
IDENT button The IDENT button causes the
transponder to transmit a special
identification pattern that is displayed on
the ground controller's radar scope.
This button should be pushed only when
requested to squawk ident by the
ground controller.
TEST button Push the TEST button to start the
transponder self-test routine.
Self-test display: The CTL-92E self-test display is
described here as a 1, 2, or 3 step
process. Step 1 always occurs while
Steps 2 and 3 may occur as follows:
