Analysis

The reflective piece “Game Changers” highlights a group of young adults who was able
to excel in their job with talents and skills they developed throughout high school from a
videogame. It outlines talents that was developed from their time that played a role in the
elevation in their career. As such, the features of language include Language Registers and
Communicative behaviours can be analyzed.
Within the reflective piece there are multiple example of language registers being
portrayed. For example, in the story when Derrik walked into room 25 and noticed his old friend
he had used the word “wassup”, which is slang to question someone about their current
condition, this is an example of casual also known as informal register. More examples of casual
registers can be found in dialogue shared between Derrik, Jacob and Luke, as they are friends
and this type of register is used amongst, acquaintances and peers. Another register can be found
in the dialogue shared with Mr. Davis and his employees. He uses Standard English and
formulating complete sentences and never uses any slang, coded language or ellipsis.
Communicative behaviours refers to a person’s tendency to express feelings, needs and
thoughts by means of indirect message and behavioral impacts. In the reflective piece when
Derrik met with Jacob and Luke they exchanged high fives, high fives are a form of greeting one
carries out with one’s friend to represent their close bond. Later in the short story after the trio
had received their promotion the story states “their excitement was written all over their faces”
this is an example of communicative behaviour, as without words they were able to convey the
joy they felt about receiving their promotion.
This short story highlights a purpose that some skills that originate from playing
videogames play in the business world, while effectively using various language registers and
numerous communicative behaviuor.
