Monarchy- A political system undivided sovereignty or one-person rule.

The term applies to the states


in which the highest authority is given to the monarch, the individual rulers who act as heads of state
and gain their position through heredity. A monarchy is a form of government in which the supreme
power is vested or deemed to be vested in an individual, the head of state, who is usually for life or
until resignation, and is "completely separated from all members of the state."

Queen Elizabeth II is also the Sovereign of 15 countries in the Commonwealth of Nations:
Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Canada, Grenada, Jamaica, New
Zealand, Papua New Guinea, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, the
Solomon Islands, and Tuvalu.

SAXON KINGS. Egbert (Ecgherht) was the first monarch to establish a stable and extensive
rule over all of Anglo-Saxon England. After returning from exile at the court of Charlemagne in 802, he
regained his kingdom of Wessex.

Why was monarchy created?


It originated with the feudal systems of medieval Europe. Under feudalism, there were a few very
powerful landowners who acquired large amounts of territory through military force or purchase.
These landowners became high-ranking lords, and one of them was crowned king.

Who was the first royal family in the world?


According to legend, the Imperial House of Japan was founded in 660 BCE by Japan's first Emperor,
Jimmu, making it the oldest continuous hereditary monarchy in the world. Although Japan's monarchy
has mythological origins, the country recognizes February 11, 660 BCE as the official date of its
founding.

How much power does the Queen have?


Technically, the queen still retains certain political powers, known as her "personal prerogatives" or
the "queen's reserve powers" (makes her sound like a superhero). Among those reserve powers are
the power to appoint the prime minister, to open and close sessions of Parliament, and to approve
legislation.

How many royal families are left?


Ever since the French Revolution, the future of monarchy in the world has been a bit shaky. As
recently as 2008, communist revolutionaries in Nepal overthrew their monarchy to establish a
republic. Still, despite a couple centuries of toppling kings, there are 44 monarchies in the world
today.

What is the longest lasting monarchy?


Elizabeth II is currently the longest-reigning monarch, having been Queen of the United Kingdom,
Canada, Australia and New Zealand since 6 February 1952 that makes her the Queen for 69 years.
