Issue No. 3
Component Identification Date 25.Sep.02
General Notes:
This Technical Data (TD) Document provides the detailed requirements for which there is
insufficient space on the component drawing.
The requirements of an individual TD may be altered by the addition of a specific note on the
drawing. In this case the additional note shall override the requirements stated in the TD.
Any changes to the structure or content of this TD must be actioned by means of a Design
Change (DC), approved by the owner.

PURPOSE.
Perkins component brand strategy has been developed to ensure that all Perkins parts are
clearly and consistently marked in a manner that builds brand equity and product confidence
in the minds of our customers.
Where deviation from this document is unavoidable, the information agreed with Parts
Marketing Product Team shall be incorporated within a new drawing or added to a released
drawing by Prototype Alteration or Design Change. For new drawings reference to this
agreed change shall be recorded in the Design Job File.
Our policy of applying the Perkins trademark and brand name to all engine components
provides our customers with the confidence that they are investing in genuine Perkins parts
and the unrivalled quality that they represent.
Additionally a clear consistent applied Perkins brand helps to protect us from competition.

APPENDICES.
1. SCOPE.
1.1 TD 520 defines the mandatory marking requirements for all production components.
The most important of these components are defined in Appendix 1 of this document.
1.2 The component marking instructions outlined in TD 520 shall be applied to all
production components. Unless specifically requested, the standard shall not be
applied retrospectively where specific tooling modifications would be required to
incorporate the required markings.
1.3 For prototype components, part number only (or pattern number if applicable) shall be
the mandatory marking requirement. Since many prototype components are supplied
in small batches it is sufficient for the batch container to be labelled with the prototype
part number. However, the full marking requirements, as for a production component,
shall be applied to the prototype drawing, to indicate the required production status
when such approval has been granted.
2. COMPONENT MARKING.
The Design Engineer shall designate the position of the required markings on the
component within the restrictions as indicated in Appendix 1 and with due consideration to
the functional requirements of the component. Application of Supplier’s markings is
prohibited – refer to paragraph 2.2.
It is important to note that component failure can arise from stamped markings particularly
on cast and high tensile materials.
All components and assemblies must reference a Perkins part number to enable
effective identification. In the case of components from pattern or die, the Perkins
pattern/die number shall appear.
Issue No. 3
Component Identification Date 25.Sep.02
For Peterborough based components with available marking space constraints, the
last four digits may be used in place of the full part number or pattern / die number.
The application of a supplier’s own mark of identification, or any supplier mark that
may link a Perkins component to the source of supply (with the exception of the
Perkins supplier’s code reference) is strictly prohibited, except for items in the
Commodities Manual which are not supported by individual drawings. These items
will be covered by “Package Identified Components” as detailed in Appendix 2.
3. MARKING LOCATION.
Instructions detailing approved marking locations for certain critical components can be
found in Appendix 1 of this document.
To allow for future flexibility in Perkins branding strategy all components that are
visible upon engine assembly must not have permanent branding of the company
complete ideograph (refer to Appendix 3) applied to customer visible surfaces
(permanent brand marks are those forming an integral part of the supplier tooling).
These components shall carry externally visible branding in the form of labels or
plates.
In situations where these components require permanent marking this shall be applied
to non-visible surfaces.
Issue No. 3
Component Identification Date 25.Sep.02
4. MARKING TECHNIQUE.
Special instructions detailing approved marking techniques for certain critical components
can be found in Appendix 1 of this document.
4.3 Components with insufficient surface area for applying required markings.
All plastic type material shall be marked with its relevant material code as defined in
BS7010. Refer to TD 319 for details.
Issue No. 3
Component Identification Date 25.Sep.02
Piston Rings may require colour coding as specified on the component drawing. The
mark shall be applied in accordance with the following illustration and shall not exceed
0.01mm raised thickness. Application shall be prior to any preservation treatment of
the ring.
The marking material shall withstand normal handling without flaking or removal and it
shall have no detrimental effect to the normal working of the piston ring.

5.3 Seals.
Seals (e.g. ‘O’ ring section) when pre-fitted into location grooves of matching colour
(black in black), create difficulty in verifying seal fitment. Application of a marker pen
is required so as to establish a colour identity stripe. The condition described will be
encountered on all black composite materials that embody an interface-sealing
element. The marker stripe shall be yellow and shall bridge across the joint face and
seal (O ring).
