3.GENERAL GEOLOGY

The present sites were situated in Adilabad District of Andhra Pradesh. Adilabad district

covers an area of about 16,128 sq. km and bounded by Lat.18 Deg 40 Min & 19 Deg 56

Min and Long.77 Deg 46 Min and 80 Deg. The district is bounded on the north by Yetmal

and Chanda districts of Maharastra, on the east by Chanda District of Maharastra, on the

south by Karimnagar and Nizamabad districts of Andhra Pradesh, and on the West by

Nanded district of Maharastra.

Physiography:

The Sahyadriparvat or Satnala range traversing north west-south east for about 282 Km, is

the prominent hilll range in the district.

Lithological Units:

Silty clay, Sand stone, Shale.

Drainage:

The most important river draining the district is the Godavari, the other important

rivers are the Penuganga, the Wardha, the Pranhita, the Kadam, and the Peddavagu

which are tributaries of the river Godavari.

Geology of the District:

Gondwanas: These form a part of Pranhita Godavari basin and occupy the eastern part of

the district and are exposed near Sirpur, Asifabad, Bellampally, Mandamarry, Mancherial,

Chinnur and Yemanalapalle.

The lower Gondwana group comprises of Talchir, Barakar and Kamthi formation and

the upper Gondwana group comprises of Maleri, Kota and chikiala formations. The

Talchirs consist of boulder beds, shales and stand stones. The boulder bed is of glacial

origin and consist of boulders, cobbles and pebbles of granite, gneisses, quartzite,

limestone, shale and sandstone embedded in argillaceous matrix. Sandstones are

greenish, grey and brown in colour and are fine grained. Barkers, the next younger

formation rest on the Talchirs. The formation comprises of sandstone, carbonaceous

shale and coal seams. The kamthi formation succeeds Barkers. This consist of

ferruginous sandstones with intercalations of conglomerate and ferruginous shales.

4. METHODOLOGY

Core Cutter Method:

Clean and leveling the ground where the density is to be measured. The

cutter is penetrated to its full depth with the help of steel rammer, removing

the soil around the cutter by spade and lifting the cutter out and measuring

its weight including soil by cleaning outside surface of cutter. Representative

soil from the cutter is taken out for further laboratory tests.

5.RESULTS & RECOMMENDATIONS

As per the field visit on 09.10.2013 and collections of the compacted soil samples at
specified 10 locations from the site duly following Core Cutter Method and conducting of
the laboratory tests as per IS: 2720.
The table show the results of the tests in the field & Laboratory as follows:

Sample Maximum Dry

No Density
FMC OMC %
 (Field)  (Lab) Compaction
g/CC (%) d d

g/Cm3 g/Cm3

1 15.42 23.50 1.01 1.95 51.50

2 13.97 21.80 0.99 1.89 52.70

3 12.42 19.65 1.03 1.85 55.40

4 13.97 22.55 1.00 1.79 56.00

IMS Explorations

1. As per the field & Laboratory tests it is observed that the average percentage compaction in
the site is 52.60% (Less than 95%).

2. The results obtained in the field & laboratory tests is not within permissible limits, hence it is
recommended to re-conduct the compaction/consolidation, duly excavating the loose soil
up to 1.0m depth from the ground level and refill in layers (thickness of each layer is not
more than 150mm) and consolidate with power roller/ vibratory roller up to the required
compaction(not less than 95%) .
