The Passive Voice

Ex. 1. Open the brackets

1. Their new house is being built for 3 years already. They are waiting when
they can give a house-warming party.
2. Everyone was invited to the party last Sunday but Elise. She had always
been an outcast.
3. The children liked to play in the house which wasn't lived in.
4. They had nothing for dinner. The fish was eaten by the cat, the meat was
swallowed by the dog, the pie was stolen by a pig that got into the house
through the opened door. Nothing edible could be found in the fridge as
well.
5. The doctor was sent for every time when the child has a high temperature.
6. Don’t worry! Everything will be ok. The essay will have been finished by
Friday and will have been handed in in time.
7. Lots of new houses are being built in our street now.
8. He has been thought to have lived for 10 years in London. Lots of his
neighbors believe in it.
9. Hands must be washed before having meals.
10.When Jane read the Morning Times, she got panic-stricken. Their children
were reported to have been lost in the forest.
11.If you promise to do something, your promise can’t be broken.
12. The milk had to be thrown away as it had gone bad.

Ex 2. Paraphrase the sentences using the Passive Voice.

1. Jack remembered that nobody had ever slept in their guest room.
*Jack remembered that their guest room hadn't been slept in by somebody.
2. They are looking after their children with utmost care.
*Their children are being looked after with utmost care.
3. They will send for John tomorrow when a new working day starts.
*John will be sent for tomorrow when a new working day starts.
4. They send for John every time when the computer demands upgrading.
*John is sent for every time when the computer demands upgrading.
5. They are sending for John now as some virus has attacked the computer.
