What is It

Now, let us discuss on the elements and principles of arts.

ELEMENTS OF ART

Line- is the path of a moving point. Lines define the edges of shapes and
forms.

______________________________

Shape- is an area enclosed by line. It is 2 dimensional and can be geometric

or organic.

Forms- are 3-Dimesional. They occupy space or give the illusion that they
occupy the space.

Color- is the most expressive element of art and is seen by the way light
reflects of a surface and also adds interest and reality to an artwork.

5
Value- is the lightness and darkness of a surface. It is often referred to when
shading. Value is also important in the study of color.

Texture- is the actual surface feel or the simulated appearance of roughness,

smoothness and many others.

Space- is the distance around, between, above, below, and within an object.

PRINCIPLES OF ART

Balance- refers to the visual of the elements of the composition. It is a sense

that the painting “feels stable and feels right”.

Contrast- is the difference between elements of art in the composition, such

that each element is made stronger in relation to the other.

Emphasis- is when the artist creates an area of the composition that is

visually dominant and commands the viewer’s attention.

Pattern- is the uniform repetition of any of the elements of art or any

combination thereof.

6
Movement- is the result of using the elements of art such that they move the
viewer’s eye around and within the image.

Rhythm- is created by movement complied through the repetition of elements

of art in a non-uniform but organized way.

Unity/Variety- is visually pleasing agreement among the elements in a design.

It is the feeling that everything in the work of art works together and looks like
it fits.

What’s More

Directions: Draw your dream house. Use coloring materials to make it more
beautiful and realistic. Observe the elements and principles you use in making
your drawing. Write these elements and principles using the table below.

What I Can Do

Directions: Follow the steps on making the Plastic Bottle craft below. Use the
rubric as your guide in making the artwork.

Activity Title: Plastic Bottle Craft

Materials:
 Plastic bottle
 Art materials (e.g. pair of scissors)
 Different colors of old and unused shirts

Steps on how to make the yarn:

1. Lay your t-shirt out on a work surface.
Cut a horizontal line directly under the
sleeves. Cut off the hem (edge) on the
bottom of the shirt. You only need the
middl
e
section for this project.
2. Fold one side of the t- shirt

8
towards to the other, leaving a one inch space at the top.

3. Cut into strips (one inch thick) – do not cut the space at the top.

4. Unfold the t-shirt so you can see the separate strips.

Following the photo, begin cutting the strips diagonally
across. Starting at the first strip, cut diagonally across to the
second strip. Repeat the steps until the end of the shirt.

5. After getting a single strip of t-shirt yarn, pull it through

your hands to create the tube shape. This enables the
edges to curl. Keep pulling until it is all tube-shaped. Do this
with the other shirts.

Steps in Making the Plastic Bottle Craft:

1. Cut the bottle into half or desired height as shown in picture 1A. Cut the
sides of the bottle to make strips as shown in picture 1B.

A B

2. Get your t-shirt yarn. Tie the end of the yarn to the first strip so that the yarn
will not move when weaving. Start weaving the yarn to the body of the bottle
using over-under technique as shown in picture 2A. Finish up to the top of the
bottle as shown in picture 2B.

9
A B

You can use different colors of t-shirt yarn to make your plastic bottle craft
more beautiful. Be creative and enjoy the activity.

This is the rubric for your Plastic Bottle Craft.
