mathematical principle and disguised it in the six scratch lottery tickets you now own.

We first came across this principle in Professor Hoffman’s book Puzzles Old and New
originally published in 1893. It has also been manufactured as a magic trick and sold
under various titles including "The Great Number Mystery" and the "Magic Age Cards."

By using scratch tickets we’ve made sense of a necessary process and given meaning
to the numbers. Using the simple process in performance, described in the next few
pages, your audience will be left with the distinct impression that you simply read their
minds. And the best part about Powerball 60 is that it’s simple to do. In fact, it’s
almost completely self-working, involves zero sleight of hand and delivers a mind
blowing impact on spectators. The purpose of this PowerGuide is to act as a
supplement to the DVD instructions you received with your tickets and to unlock the
secrets of how to predict their thought of lottery number in advance, read several
minds at the same time, perform Powerball while standing on the other side of the
room and even perform Powerball on stage in front of hundreds of people.

The Basics
Preparing The Tickets
Remove the six tickets from the
envelope. Scratch each of the tickets to
reveal the numbers. Leave some of the
scratch “residue” around the numbers.
This will serve to solidify the authenticity
of the tickets in the spectator’s mind.

The Key Numbers

The top left corner numbers on the
number grid are the key numbers. These
key numbers are the secret to knowing
any number from 1-60 that the spectator
is thinking of. The key numbers are
shown circled in the picture at the right.

The Hidden Keys

On the back of the ticket, the key
numbers are also repeated in the last two
digits of the barcode. Each ticket’s key
number on the front of the ticket is also
on the barcode on the back. In the photo
on the right, the key number is “2”.

The Process
Any Number from 1-60
Ask the spectator to think of any number
from 1-60. Hand them the tickets and tell
them to imagine their secret number is
the winning lottery number. Explain that
if their number is on a ticket - that ticket
is a winner and to place it in the ‘winning
pile’. If their number does not appear on
a ticket - that ticket is a loser and they are
to place it in the ‘losing pile’. The spectator separates the tickets in the photo.

Separate Winners from Losers

Specify on a flat surface where the
winning tickets and losing tickets are to
be placed. As the spectator does this
separation you secretly add up the key
numbers on the winning tickets. Once
the spectator has gone through all the
tickets, the grand total of the key
numbers in the winning pile is their secret
number! Once you know their secret
number, you are ready to reveal it in a
dramatic way!

1. Spectator thinks of a number between 1 and 60.

2. Hand them the tickets and ask them to separate

the winning tickets from the losers.

3. As they separate the tickets, secretly add up

your key numbers in the winning ticket pile.

4. Comment on how lucky they are and put the

tickets away.

5. Now reveal their secretly thought-of number

in a dramatic way!

Tips & Ideas
Easy Addition
A quick and easy way to accomplish the addition in performance is to arrange the
tickets with the large key numbers on the top of the stack, down to the smallest key
number at the bottom. So in sequence from the top down it would be; 32 - 16 - 8 - 4 -
2 - 1. If you hand the tickets to the participant in this order you will be adding the
numbers from biggest to smallest, making the addition increasingly easier and less
complicated as the process progresses. Remember that you are only dealing with six
of the same numbers each and every time. The more you perform Powerball 60, the
more you will become familiar with the variety of combinations these same six numbers
create.
Written Revelation Approach
To build up the dramatic tension during performance it is advisable to have the
spectator write down their thought-of number while you write down your impression of
their thoughts on another piece of paper. The revelation happens when you both turn
your written numbers over simultaneously. There are several reasons this is a good
idea; 1) It makes for good theatre, 2) There is physical ‘evidence’ of the your powers
and 3) If you are performing for a group of people, everyone gets to experience the
climax of the effect immediately and clearly. The written revelation is also good for
noisy performing environments like restaurants, cafes and bars where a visual
conclusion does not have to be explained afterwards.

Your Number Gag

“If I had your number in my wallet would you be impressed?” Pull out a business card
that has the words YOUR NUMBER written on it. Obviously this will get a groan or
small chuckle. Now on the opposite side of the card print their actual secret number
and put the card on a table or in their hand, number side down. “Could you imagine if I
actually did know your number beforehand? Name it out loud for the first time...turn
over the card.” With the ‘gag’ reveal beforehand, the actual number revelation will play
that much stronger, simply because they will not be expecting it. When people
reconstruct the effect afterwards, many times they will state that you pulled their secret
number out of your wallet before they thought of it!

Clarifying the Process

It’s very important when the spectator goes through the tickets to find the winners and
losers, that it’s clear which tickets are the winning tickets and which are the losing
tickets. It’s of utmost importance that they place them where you have directed them
to do so. Without clear direction from you, the separation of tickets could get
confused and when it comes to tallying the key numbers to reach their secret number,
you may have difficulty that results in failure. This may seem like a basic concept, but
if you’re not direct in your instruction to “place the winner’s in my hand” or “place the
winning tickets in front of you and losers over here to the side”, participants are liable
to simply run through the tickets and not define which are the winners and losers. It’s
critical that you are in control of the situation to reach a successful conclusion.

Face Down Deception
During the process of separating the tickets it is a good idea to ask the participant to
place the tickets face down on the table or in your hand with the added line, “I don’t
even want to look at the numbers.” When the audience replays the performance in
their mind they will consciously or subconsciously remember that you did not even
look at the tickets or the numbers, and somehow you were able to deduce what the
secret number was. You of course are adding up the key numbers found on the bar
code of the tickets to find out their secret number.

Addition Anxiety
If you didn’t have a chance to accomplish the addition in performance due to the
participants quick separation of tickets, obstacles in the way of viewing the key
numbers or any other distraction, there is a way out. A simple statement like, “I just
need to hold those winning tickets in my hand, just place them in my hand,” you can
have them place them face down in your hand, spread them a little yourself so you can
view the key numbers, do the addition and you know the secret number. Remember,
the audience does not know the method of the effect and this only emphasizes a false
one (energy).

Wallet Mini-Index
In six different locations and on six different surfaces in your wallet (possibly using
stickers, business cards, maybe photos, etc.) you have six short predictions that read
something like, “You will have 3 winning tickets.” Each of the predictions will predict
one of the possible six outcomes the participant will have. Begin by placing your
wallet on the table, hand them the tickets and go through the routine to the point where
you are about to reveal the thought of number. Ask the spectator if they would be
impressed if you were to know the exact number of winning tickets they would have?
Open your wallet and display the correct prediction that matches up with the winning
number of tickets they in fact had. Reluctantly state that in reality the odds in this case
are only 6 to 1. But would they impressed if you were to know there secret winning
lottery number? That would be 60 to 1. Verbally reveal their secret number.

Energy Presentation
Introduction: This is the ideal presentation if you want to do something quick and
mind blowing. It takes up little
performance time and plays incredibly
strong without a big verbal presentation.

Energy Repeat
The energy theme almost begs for a repeat performance. And the nice thing is you
can, with any other number. Because the process of separating the tickets is justified
and apparently imperative to the success of the outcome, it is a perfect marriage of
presentation and method. The separation of the tickets is legitimized and necessary.
Other people will want you to ‘sense’ their secret number, involving more people and
making it personal for them. Simply go through the same performance structure
emphasizing that there is something about focusing on the winning tickets that gives
off an energy that you can tap into. To build upon what you’ve begun with and to
create an even more impossible scenario, you may want to follow up with the LDT
(Long Distance Telepathy) that can be found later in this guide.

Coincidence Presentation
Introduction: This presentation was created to have a fun and funny way to perform
Powerball 60. Coincidence is perfect for performers who don’t take themselves too
seriously but still want their effects to make a strong impact. This presentation leads
the audience ‘down the garden path’ and then pulls the proverbial rug out from under
them with an ending that they don’t expect.

Coincidence Script

Rage Against The Machine

Introduction: This presentation attempts to answer the question every magician
eventually gets asked. “If you were a real magician, you would be able to give me the
winning lottery numbers!” It’s a logical approach to answer this eternal question and
leaves them wondering if you really could know the winning numbers. When you reveal
their secret winning number, the tickets are out of play and in your wallet, giving the
impression that they had nothing at all to do with the effect.

I get asked the most is, if you’re such a good magician can you tell me the winning
lottery numbers!? Of course, I can’t because it’s pure random luck.

AT THIS POINT YOU CASUALLY GATHER UP THE TICKETS AND PUT THEM IN
YOUR WALLET OR POCKET.

Performer: It’s a machine that spews out these numbers. There’s no energy behind it,
no vibrations, nothing I can read into. But if a person chooses that winning number,
then there would be something tangible to play with. For example you’ve got a winning
number in your head, right? Now think about this, you didn’t tell anybody that number,
you didn’t write it down, it’s locked in your mind. I’m going to try to get at that number.
Think of that number and look into my eyes. Got it. It’s 40 (insert actual secret number
here).

Multiple Mind Read

Introduction: The premise for this presentation is a competition between 2-3
spectators to see which one is the luckiest. The participants play secret thought-of
numbers using the Powerball scratch tickets to see how many winning tickets, out of
six, they can get. While they do this you secretly add up the key numbers for each
participant’s winning tickets. You keep track of the participant’s score using a pen and
paper, giving you the opportunity to create a secret crib sheet of the secret numbers
generated from your adding the key numbers for each participant.

Needed:
Powerball 60 tickets
Pen and paper

Multiple Mind Read Script

Performer: We’re going to see who the luckiest person is here. Using these used
scratch tickets each person is going to think of a secret lucky number and play them
using these tickets.

Performer: This game is called Powerball 60, it’s essentially random numbers between
1 and 60, so lock a secret number in your minds right now between 1 and 60. Don’t tell
anyone your secret number and please be honest and don’t change your number half
way through. Everyone got one? Good. We’ll start with you Mary...

HAND THE FIRST PARTICIPANT THE TICKETS. PICK UP THE PEN AND PAPER
AND MAKE A TALLY CHART WITH ROOM FOR THE SECRET CRIB UNDERNEATH.

Performer: Mary, take these tickets and go through them one at a time, and if your

down in front of you and place the losing tickets, the ones that don’t have your number

magician, I am frequently asked to give
people the winning lottery numbers. I
know most people are joking, but secretly
I think they really wish I could! I can’t
crack the code for the lottery, but I can
read people. For example right now each

of you are thinking of a secret lottery number. You haven’t told anyone that number and
you haven’t written it down. There is no ‘natural’ way for me to get at the numbers that
are hidden in your minds. But I’d like to try. Concentrate on those numbers. Mary your
number is 24, Bob your number is 58 and Isaac your number is 2.

Envelope Prediction
Introduction: This presentation has a devastating effect on audiences. It is one thing
to read someone’s mind, but it is quite
another thing to have predicted in
advance what they were going to think.
The method is simplicity itself, with no
nail writers, carbon impressions, etc. A
real time miracle prediction.

Needed:
No.3 Coin Envelope
Business Card (one side must be blank
for the written prediction)
X-Acto knife or Box Cutters
Pencil or Pen

Preparation:
1) On the non-flap side of the envelope you will need to cut out a small window,
approximately 1/2” square, using the
knife. To be sure you don’t cut through
two layers of the envelope it is advisable
to put a business card inside the
envelope before cutting. The cut-out
window is circled in the photos at right.

2) Take the business card and on the

blank side write the following statement;
“Your lucky number will be”
After the word “be” you will need to have
the necessary space to be able to write
in the thought of number. By writing this
message alongside the envelope it will
help you to line up the cut out window
with the space you leave. Add your
signature at the bottom of the card and
your done.

3) Slide the business card message side

up on the ‘window’ side of the envelope,

so the space you created on the
business card will be lined up with the
cut-out window. You can place this in
your wallet with your Powerball 60
scratch tickets, along with the pencil/pen
you used to write your message with.
We put a golf pencil in our wallet so
everything is ready to perform.

with a person it’s totally different. There
is something to read into. I’d like to try
an experiment with you to see how lucky
you would be. I need you to imagine you
are playing the lottery. So think of a
number between 1 and 60 in your mind.

Performer: Do you think it would have been impressive if I had predicted the number
of winning tickets you had? I actually took things a step beyond and made a note on a
business card before meeting you here today...

PICK UP THE TICKETS AND PUT THEM AWAY IN YOUR WALLET. THEN SLOWLY
OPEN THE ENVELOPE, WITH THE FLAP SIDE OF THE ENVELOPE UP, CUT-OUT
WINDOW SIDE DOWN. SLOWLY SLIDE OUT THE BUSINESS.

Performer: Please hold out your hand nice and flat.

PLACE THE BUSINESS CARD WRITING SIDE DOWN, ON THE OUTSTRETCHED

HAND OF THE SPECTATOR. PLACE THE ENVELOPE IN YOUR POCKET.

Performer: Now the secret number, your secret lucky number has only been in your
mind correct?

Participant: Yes.

Performer: You didn’t write it down, you

didn’t tell anyone that number, right?

Participant: Yes.

Performer: So there is definitely no way

I could have known the number before I
met you today, is that right?

Participant: Yes.

Performer: Turn over the card.

After-Facting Prediction
Introduction: This is an extremely bold and effective way to present Powerball 60 as a
prediction effect without utilizing an envelope, nail writer, etc. You begin by creating a
written prediction, leaving the number of winning tickets and secret number areas
blank. You receive this information after the participant performs the separation
sequence. You then read your prediction aloud after the separation sequence, verbally
filling in the blanks with the number of winning tickets along with their secret lottery
number you generated from the addition of your key numbers. At this point the
audience is convinced that you have in fact predicted the secret number and under the
guise of signing your name, you simply fill in the two blank spots and give the card
away as a souvenir.

Needed:
Powerball 60 scratch tickets
Business card and a pencil

Performer: People ask me if I can predict the lottery. The answer is no. For example
here is 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, & 6 losing scratch tickets.

REMOVE TICKETS FROM YOUR WALLET AND PLACE THEM ON THE TABLE.

Performer: But I have been trying. What I’ve deduced is that it is really hard to read
into these random numbers. There is no heart, no soul behind them. With people it’s
different. There’s a heart, there’s a soul, there’s hope behind their thoughts. I’d like to
try something, an experiment. Before we begin I’m going to write something on this
card. It’s just a hunch, but we’ll see how we do...

Introduction: Now you can read minds...from across the room! This presentation or
approach is ideal as a follow up or repeat performance of Powerball 60. From the
audience’s perspective, you ask them to think of any other number between 1 and 60,
hand them the tickets, walk across the room. You ask that they once again play their
secret number against the scratch tickets separating the winners from the losers.
Without leaving your position from across the room...you name their number with
100% accuracy!

Preparation:
The only thing you need to do is place the Powerball 60 tickets into a decreasing key
number stack. So in this order from the top down, 32 - 16 - 8 - 4 - 2 and 1 at the
bottom.
You will need to memorize these numbers and their order. This small bit of effort will be
worth it’s weight in audience impact. Believe us.

L.D.T. (Long Distance Telepathy) Part 2

Introduction: Now you can read minds...from across the room, with your back turned!
L.D.T. Part 2 cancels out any suspicions your audiences may have in regards to how
you could be figuring out their secretly thought of numbers. From the audience’s
perspective, you ask them to think of any other number between 1 and 60, hand them
the tickets, walk across the room and turn your back to them. You ask that they,
once again, play their secret number against the scratch tickets separating the winners
from the losers. Once they’ve done that you ask them to sit on the loser’s and to place
the winner’s between their palms. You then name their number with 100% accuracy!

Preparation:
Once again you need to do is place the Powerball 60 tickets into a decreasing number
stack. So in this order from the top down, 32 - 16 - 8 - 4 - 2 and 1 at the bottom.
Memorize these numbers and their order.

L.D.T. & E. (Long Distance Telepathy and Envelope)

Introduction: Not only can you read minds from across the room...but you can also
show how you predicted the number they were going to think about in advance. This
is a killer presentation that has the devastating effect of the Long Distance Telepathy,
followed with a sealed envelope prediction. They open the envelope themselves,
showing conclusive evidence that you predicted their mentally thought of number in
advance. This is for the audience members you want to keep awake at night, in fear
and wonderment of your deadly powers.

Needed:
Powerball 60 tickets placed into a decreasing number stack, from the top down, 32 -
16 - 8 - 4 - 2 and 1 at the bottom. Just like in L.D.T. you will need to memorize these
numbers and their order.

Rubber Cement
Scissors
No.3 Coin Envelope
Business Card
Large Paperclip
Golf Pencil

Preparation:
1) First you will need to clip a sliver off of
the bottom of the coin envelope. This is
the access point for your business card
prediction.

2) Spread rubber cement around the

inside of this opening. Approximately a
quarter of an inch into the envelope.

3) Now keep the bottom opening of this

envelope open while the rubber cement
dries. After it dries continue to keep it
open. Your business card prediction will
be keeping both cement-treated sides of
the envelope opening separate until it’s
time to seal it closed.

4) You will need to pre-write the

following on a business card, leaving
space at the end to write in the
participant’s secret number.

5) Insert the business card, writing side up, into the opening leaving it protruding

placing the entire unit into a convenient pocket along with your golf pencil. We use our
inside jacket pocket.

completely different direction using the element of sound. In this presentation you
actually leave the room the participant is in and based on their verbal reactions to the
tickets you have the information needed to calculate their secret number.

you will moan in failure because you have a loser. Based on your reactions alone and
the energy and hope, or disappointment behind these reactions, I will attempt to know
your secret number. This will be incredibly difficult because I am going to be in the next
room! Are you ready?

TICKETS ARE IN THE SET DESCENDING ORDER YOU WILL KNOW WHICH
TICKETS ARE WINNERS AND LOSERS. ONCE THEY HAVE GONE THROUGH THE
SIX TICKETS YOU SHOULD KNOW WHAT THEIR THOUGHT OF NUMBER IS, BY

Afterthought
You could also do this over cell phones. With the spectator doing the victory cry or
moan of defeat over the phone while you listen and make your calculations. You then
make your revelation of their secret number over the phone.

Powerball On Stage
Introduction: Imagine you’re in a position where you’ve been asked to do
something magical on stage in front a large group of people. With Powerball 60 in
your wallet, you can perform a very powerful and entertaining routine on stage.

Powerball On Stage Script

Performer: The two most popular questions I get as a magician are; 1) Can you make

Performer: What I realize, after all my research, is that it is total luck and I want to
prove it to you guys tonight. How many people here consider themselves lucky?

AUDIENCE MEMBERS RAISE THEIR HANDS.

Performer: We’re going to find out who the luckiest person in the room is tonight...so
let’s see, how about you sir!

ADDRESS A GENTLEMAN IN THE FRONT ROW, INVITING HIM TO THE STAGE.

Performer: And I think you look pretty lucky and how about you as well...let’s give
these guys a big hand for coming up!

INVITE TWO WOMEN NEAR THE STAGE TO COME UP, AND LEAD THE
APPLAUSE TO WELCOME THEM.

Performer: Thanks for coming up guys. Do you play the lottery? It really doesn’t
matter if you do, or not, because luck has little to do with how much you gamble or risk.

winning lottery number. We’re going to use these used scratch tickets, a game called
Powerball 60 that has random numbers between one and sixty on them. So I want you
to choose a number between one and sixty in your mind. Do you guys have a number?

PARTICIPANTS RESPOND.

Performer: Please keep the number in your head, don’t tell anyone, don’t write it down
just lock it in your mind. Now each of you will play your secret number against these
scratch tickets. You’re going to take the tickets, look over each one, and if your number
is on a ticket, that’s a winning ticket and I want you to place it here on this table. If your
number does not appear on a ticket, that would be a loser and I want you to place it on
this chair here. Let’s start with you...

HAND THE TICKETS TO THE FIRST SPECTATOR AND POSITION THEM BEHIND A
TABLE, WITH A CHAIR BESIDE IT AND PICK UP AND PEN AND PAPER TO KEEP

in these games of chance really comes down to luck. And that’s the real reason I can’t

predict the lottery. But three people just mentally selected numbers, numbers in their
minds. Numbers they didn’t write down and didn’t whisper to anyone. Secret numbers
that only exist in your heads. Right guys?

PARTICIPANTS RESPOND POSITIVELY.

Performer: I’m going to attempt to read each of your minds...Bob if you’re thinking of
the number 15 take a seat.

THE FIRST PARTICIPANT TAKES A SEAT, TO A ROUND OF APPLAUSE.

Performer: Sarah, look at me and just think of that number. Say nothing out loud, just
think...I’m getting the number 22. If that’s your number take a seat.

THE SECOND PARTICIPANT TAKES THEIR SEAT, TO A ROUND OF APPLAUSE.

Performer: Now people if I get this last number correct that’s three out of three. Think
about this, these are random numbers that have only existed in their minds! Are you
ready to go nuts? Okay, hardly seems worth it, but let’s try...Jennifer, it’s an odd
number is that true?

Participant: Yes.

Performer: A high number, a number over 45, am I right? If your number is 53 you are
going to take your seat to the world’s biggest round of applause.

PARTICIPANT TAKES HER SEAT AND THE AUDIENCE APPLAUDS. TAKE A BOW.

Afterthought
If you have access to Powerpoint, a large pad of paper or white board you could also
write down the numbers and just before revealing your impressions you could have the
participants name their numbers out loud.

BONUS: ENERGY (THE POWER HOUSE ROUTINE)

Performer: People are always asking me if I can tell them the winning lottery numbers.
(PAUSE) …Not yet, but I’m working on it!

TAKE OUT THE POWERBALL 60 TICKETS

Performer: I’ve discovered something. There is a very strong energy that happens
every time people play the lottery. If you think about it, it makes sense; there is a lot of
hope, anticipation and excitement every time we play the lottery.

And with that comes some very strong energy. So strong that sometimes I can actually
pick up on it. I know this sounds crazy, let me try something with you. This is
Powerball 60 so think of a number between 1 and 60 and that will be your secret
winning lottery number. In order for this to work, I need you to really imagine that you
are playing the lottery. So here, take these tickets and play them out. If you see your
number on a ticket imagine that is a winning ticket, try to feel the excitement and then
put the ticket in my hand. If it doesn’t have your number on it, imagine it’s a loser and
put is off to the side.

AS THEY ARE DOING THIS PROCEDURE, TALLY UP THE NUMBERS IN YOUR

HEAD. WHEN THEY ARE FINISHED, YOU SHOULD KNOW THEIR NUMBER.
 
Peformer: Wow that was strong. I think I sensed the number….was it 23?
 
Phase 2 (The Repeat)

Performer: Let’s try it again but this time, I don’t want to actually touch the tickets.
Do it again but this time put the winning tickets on the table in front of you…not in my
hand.

REVEAL THEIR NUMBER AGAIN USING THE SAME PROCEDURE AS BEFORE. 

 
Phase 3 (The Killer Ending)
 
Performer: This time I am going to try something I have never tried. I am going to
stand all the way on the other side of the room as you do this and because your energy
was so strong, I think I may be able to still pick up on it.
 
AS YOU ARE GATHERING UP THE TICKETS FROM THE LAST PHASE, CASUALLY
PLACE THEM IN DESCENDING NUMBER ORDER (32 TO 1). HAND THE TICKETS
TO THE SPECTATOR JUST BEFORE YOU MOVE TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE
ROOM AND KEEP YOUR EYE ON THEM TO MAKE SURE THEY DO NOT MIX UP
THE ORDER OF THE TICKETS.

ONCE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ROOM, ASK THE SPECTATOR TO REPEAT
THE PROCEDURE, BUT THIS TIME WHEN THEY SEE A WINNING TICKET THEY
SHOULD PUT IT INTO THEIR POCKET AND DISCARD THE LOSERS ON THE
TABLE.

SIMPLY BY WATCHING THE ORDER OF THE TICKETS, YOU WILL SEE WHICH
ONES GO INTO THEIR POCKETS AND YOU WILL KNOW WHAT
CORRESPONDING NUMBER TO ADD EACH TIME THEY PUT ONE IN THEIR
POCKET.

Afterthoughts: Remember, we are giving you an idea of how to structure each phase
but please feel free to structure this any way you want. The key is to make it so that
each phase gets gradually stronger.  The beauty of this routine is that you can pick
and choose different methods from the PDF to use for each phase.
