Electrical Wiring (Star Delta Mechanism)

Aim:
Three Phase Wiring with Star Delta mechanism – To record and visualize the power
saving of Heavy duty Motor by Star-Delta Mechanism.

About the topic:

3 – Phase inductor motor on star – delta starter:

Three phase power is a common method of alternating current electric power

generation, transmission and distribution for longer distances. A three – phase
circuit is usually more economic than an equivalent single-phase circuit at the
same line to ground voltage because it uses less conductive material to transmit
a given amount of electric power. 3-Phase power is used in
Industrial/Commercial supplies. It consists of 4 wires (3 live wires and 1 neutral
and 1 earthing).
Colour Coding for wires: Red Phase
Yellow- Phase
Blue- Phase
Black- Neutral
Green- Earthing

The input standard voltage is 440 V ± 10 %.

There are two basic 3 – phase configuration that are star and delta.

Specification of Motor:
 Rating power: 5 H.P. = 3.7 KW
 Rating voltage: 415 ± 15 %
 Rpm: 2880
 Frequency: 50 Hz ± 3 %
 Rating current: 8.3 A
 Connection: Star-Delta
 Head of motor: 24 m
 Resistance: 50 Ω
 Rotation: Anti-clockwise
 Working: Mutual Induction

When a 3-Phase induction motor starts the starting current is about 3 times the running
Current so to prevent the motor coil from burning due to high current a star-delta
connection is used to reduce the starting current to 1/3rd.

1 – Phase Wiring:
1- Phase wiring is generally used in residential supply units. It consists of 3 types of
wires i.e., Phase, neutral and earthing.
Standard Input voltage= 240V ± 10 %

2) Lamp holder
3) 2 Way Switch
4) Cutter/ Line tester

The total cost of the experiment is Rs 26,405/-

Safety Equipment:

Helmets, Gloves, Shoes.

Procedure:
1. First all the wire connections need to be checked before performing any
observations.
2. The multi-meter is to be set on 40 a current as it is the standard current for a 5
H.P. Motor.
3. Before starting the motor, priming is a necessary step to remove air.
4. Now observations of voltage are to be taken for no load condition for star and
delta connections respectively.
5. For first 8-12 seconds the connection is between main and star connection.
6. All readings for red yellow and blue colour wires are to be taken for star
connection and then for delta connection when the motor is in normal running
condition.
7. Similarly, all readings are to be noted for loading condition
