KENNETH WILSON Why I Am Running For Mayor
KENNETH WILSON Why I Am Running For Mayor
Simply stated, I am running for Mayor to serve the citizens of Jackson, Mississippi.
The conditions have become so bad that we believe our better days have passed.
Neighborhoods are filled with empty houses, instead of safety and thriving communities.
Crime has spread across our city so much that our elders will not commute after dark.
Apathy settles in our community and we stop holding our leaders accountable for jobs they were
elected to do; and this is when our communities perish, when we stop believing.
We pay extra taxes for the convention center and have gotten less.
We pay increases for water and sewer rates and have gotten less.
We pay for the 1% sales tax and have gotten less than what we were told!
We recently were asked to pay for a $60M bond for schools we can not keep open or our children safe.
Anyone that tells you that they have a $2 billion dollar plan is lying!
As it is often said, the only way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time, and Jackson’s problems are the
elephant!
The best way to address our problems will be to run good government. The fundamentals of
government require efficient and effective approaches to JOBS/ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT,
INFRASTRUCTURE, and PUBLIC SAFETY.
We need jobs to stabilize many of the issues of our beloved City. People need hope. Our young children
and graduates need to know that there is an opportunity to be educated here, gainfully employed here,
can buy a respectable and affordable home, and that they will be safe.
Areas of opportunity and growth for Jackson obviously require TECHNOLOGY AND INFRASTRUCTURE
UPGRADES. Because of the population of minority and women lead households, we will engage and
strengthen MINORITY CONTRACTORS by hiring or appointing an EBO officer, instituting a diversity study
and running an aggressive Equal Business Opportunity program.
By laying state of the art fiber optic wiring, we will attract more small businesses, support the
development of the Medical Corridor; will support the growth and development of our colleges and
universities. Jackson needs a City Arena and opportunities to further develop tourism and other
attractions. Growth in tourism creates Jobs and supports small businesses! We must invest in the
Jackson history boasted around the world. This model has worked across the State and the Country!
As an EDUCATOR, I understand the necessity of our schools success in bringing Jackson back! and I want
them to have and be their best!
A quality education should not be determined by your zip code or social-economic status!
But as Mayor, How can you ask people to pay and support a bond for schools you can’t
As a member of the public safety community, I understand that appointing competent leadership
(chief/command staff), supporting officers with transparency and offering a career path for long term
commitment to JPD is necessary.
My crime plan requires implementing community policing, which makes Jackson Police Department a
proactive Police Department versus what we currently have is a reactive Police Department.
We must utilize technology or similar to the Johnson administration, we will utilize Crimestat. crime stat
is a mapping system that creates a mapping of incidences of crime from categories of violent crime, non-
violent crime, property crime, drug crimes, etc., but it allows us to monitor the frequency of crime in
particular areas and develop a strategy around the type of crime that the data shows.
We will develop a plan around the crime or better said collected data. We will coordinate with our
community stakeholders- neighborhood associations, business associations, churches and faith-based
groups, and schools and families.
The COVID-19 PANDEMIC has shown me that this is the time to be the most creative, the most resilient!
I believe our opportunities are limitless with the right leadership that says WE can, rather
