Cinderella Around the World

Required Materials

 The Egyptian Cinderella, by Shirley Climo

 Cendrillon: A Caribbean Cinderella, by Robert D. San Souci
 pencils, crayons, or markers
 worksheet
Opening
Ask students if they have ever heard of Cinderella.
Have students retell what they already know about the story. If a student mentions a detail that was
different than another’s’, pose the question or whether they read the exact same book or if maybe their
stories were different.
Tell students that many of the stories we know are told around the world, and sometimes the stories
change as they are shared.
Tell the students that they will hear 2 Cinderella stories today. Our goal is to see how they are the same
and different.

Body
Read 2 versions of Cinderella. Introduce each version using Google Earth to show them what part of the
world the story comes from.
Discuss the stories as a group, answering the following questions:

 What are the similarities and differences between the stories? Think of the main characters, the
setting, and the plot.
 Did you notice cultural references? Pay attention to the clothing, housing, the role of animals,
and the landscapes.
 Which story did you like best?
 Is there a story that you didn’t like? What would you change in the story to make it more
appealing?
 How are the endings similar or different?

Have students fill out worksheet including 3 same and different parts of the story.

Closing

 Allow a few students to share their work in front of the class
