Learning Target: I CAN determine the meaning of words and phrases as


they are used in the Romeo & Juliet IN ORDER TO modernize the words used by Shakespeare.

Warm Up: Directions: For the bell work, come up with three modern day
sayings/slang that you think Ms. Hollins or your grandmother doesn’t know. Then,
define them. (e.g. It’s lit = Something is nice/acceptable/brings excitement.)

When you hear a new word or
phrase, how do you determine
the meaning?

THINK ABOUT THIS.


HOW TO DECIPHER.

1. Determine if the word or phrase is


Positive or Negative Feeling
(Connotation).
2. Use context clues/surrounding
words for hints.
3. Replace words in the phrase with
synonyms to see if phrase still
makes sense.
EXAMPLES.

1. "You'll have more fun at the dance if you aren't such a


wallflower."
a. Feeling: Negative
b. Context: Not having fun at dance.
c. Synonyms: Lame/Bore

2. "You'd be a lot happier if you stopped hanging out with


your frenemy."
a. Feeling: Negative
b. Context: Hanging with this person, makes one
unhappy.
c. Synonyms: Sounds like Friend & Enemy
combined (Friend that’s an enemy.)
IMPORTANCE.

● Must know how to understand varying viewpoints and perspectives.

section of the text provided. Group with the best translation gets extra credit for today. Tag one
person per group to share your group’s translation with the rest of the class.
