The Regin of Terror

Maximilen Robespierre was a lawyer and had an active role in French political parties. He played
a prominent role in the French revolution, solidifying his substantial part via delivery of his speech
Republic of Virtue. In said speech, Robespierre justifies terror being needed in order to preserve
democracy.

In the years surrounding 1793, France was faced with an internal enemy. Four notable cities
rejected and revolted against the revolution in Paris. With this occurring, an already unstable France was
teetering on a civil war. It theorized that these mutinies were the work of outside forces that had
infiltrated France with hopes restoring the monarchy. After being elected to Committee of Public safety,
Maximilen Robespierre gave his Republic of Virtue speech suggesting the usage of terror. Two months
after Robespierre’s speech, French parliament initiated the reign of terror. The Jacobin political party
then mobilized large national army to deal with the insurrection in Paris. Under the Reign of Terror
300,000 suspected traitors were arrested. Around 27,000 died in prison or from execution.
