Quadratic Functions Trinomials

Standard form = ax2 + bx + c = 2x2 - 8x - 154

Vertex form = a(x + b)2 + c = 2(x - 11)(x + 7)
Factored form = a(x + b)(x + c) = 2(x - 2)2 - 162

Standard Form → Vertex Form

Remove the Greatest Common Factor.
2x2 - 8x - 154 → 2(x2 - 4x) - 154

Divide b by two then square it and add it into the parenthesis and subtract it on
the outside multiplied by a.
b = -4
-4 ÷ 2 = -2
-22 =4
2(x2 - 4x) - 154 →2(x2 - 4x + 4) - 4 * 2 - 154

Rewrite everything in the parenthesis to two x plus half of b

b = -4
-4 ÷ 2 = -2
2(x2 - 4x + 4) - 4 * 2 - 154 → 2(x + -2) (x + -2) - 4 * 2 - 154

Simplify
2(x + -2) (x + -2) - 4 * 2 - 154 → 2(x - 2) (x - 2) - 4 * 2 - 154
2(x - 2) (x - 2) - 4 * 2 - 154 → 2(x - 2)2 - 4 * 2 - 154
2(x - 2)2 - 4 * 2 - 154 → 2(x - 2)2 - 8 - 154
2(x - 2)2 - 8 - 154 → 2(x - 2)2 - 162

Done
2x2 - 8x - 154 →2(x - 2)2 -162
Quadratic Functions Trinomials

Standard Form → Factored Form

Remove the Greatest Common Factor.
2x2 - 8x - 154 → 2(x2 - 4x - 77)

Multiply a by c
x2 - 4x - 77
1 * -77 = -77

Write all the Factors of ac

(Tip: If the starting number is positive then all the factors are the same sign to each other, if it’s
negative the factors are opposites signs)
(Tip: use whole numbers if possible, or use the same denominator as the problem)
(Remember: + * + and - * - = +, - * + and + * - = -)
(Remember: Don’t write duplicates like 2*-3 and 3*-2; if you have that you have written all the factors)
-77
-1 * 77
-7 * 11

Find the factors that add to b

(Tip: If you need the number the opposite sign like from 7 to -7 then switch the signs for all factors.)
(Remember: If you have your number you can stop. There are no other factors with the same answer)
-1 + 77 = 76
-7 + 11 = 4 → 7 + -11 = -4

Rewrite everything in the parenthesis to two x plus each factor independently

2(x2 - 4x -77) → 2(x + 7) (x+ -11)

Simplify
2(x + 7) (x+ -11) → 2(x + 7) (x - 11)

Done
2x2 - 8x - 154 → 2(x + 7) (x - 11)
Quadratic Functions Trinomials

Vertex Form → Standard Form

Rewrite the problem to remove the exponent on the parenthesis.
2(x - 2)2 - 162 → 2(x - 2)(x - 2) - 162

Multiply a into the first parenthesis

2(x - 2)(x - 2) - 162 →(2x - 4)(x - 2) - 162

Foil the parentheses

2x * x = 2x2
2x * -2 = -4x
-4 * x = -4x
-4 * -2 = 8
(2x - 4)(x - 2) -162 →2x2 + -4x + -4x + 8 - 162

Simplify
2x2 + -4x + -4x + 8 - 162 → 2x2 + -8x + 8 - 162
2x2 + -8x + 8 - 162 → 2x2 + -8x - 154
2x2 + -8x - 154 →2x2 - 8x - 154

Done
2(x - 2)2 - 162 → 2x2 - 8x - 154

Vertex Form → Factored Form

Rewrite the equation to add y = to it.
2(x - 2)2 - 162 →y = 2(x - 2)2 - 162

Make y = 0 and solve the equation.

y = 2(x - 2)2 - 162→0 = 2(x - 2)2 - 162
0 = 2(x - 2)2 - 162 →162 = 2(x - 2)2
162 = 2(x - 2)2→81 = (x - 2)2
81 = (x - 2)2 →[1] 9 = x - 2 AND[2] -9 = x - 2
9 = x - 2, -9 = x - 2→11 = x, -7 = x

Take the opposite signs and put them into two x plus each factor independently
11 = x, -7 = x → 2(x-11)(x+7)

Done
2(x - 2)2 - 162→ 2(x-11)(x+7)

[1] If the number is negative then convert the equation into Standard Form then
to Factored Form[3]

[2] Since 9 * 9 = 81 and -9 *-9 = 81 you have to split the equation into two. One
for the left x-intercept and on for the right x-intercept

[3] If going from Standard Form then to Factored Form does not work, solve it as
if there was no negative sign and then add to the end of the number to
represent it as a negative square root.

Factored Form → Standard Form

Multiply a into the first parenthesis
2(x - 11)(x + 7) →(2x - 22)(x + 7)

Foil the parentheses

2x * x = 2x2
2x * 7 = 14x
-22 * x = -22x
-22 * 7 = -154
(2x - 22)(x + 7)→2x2 + 14x + -22x -154

Simplify
2x2 + 14x + -22x -154→2x2 - 8x - 154

Done
2(x - 11)(x + 7) → 2x2 - 8x - 154

Calculate the average of a(x-b)(x-c) by doing(b + c) /2
2(x - 11)(x + 7) → average of -11 and 7 is -2

This is your value inside the parenthesis in the place of h and a replaces s.
s(x +h)2 +o → s(x-2)2 + o
s(x-2)2 + o → 2(x-2)2 + o

Use -a/4 (b - c)2 to find o.

-a/4 (b - c)2 → -2/4 (-11-7)2
-2/4 (-11-7)2 → -2/4 (-18)2
-2/4 (-18)2→-2/4 * 324
-2/4 * 324 → -.5 * 324
-.5 * 324 → -162

Plug that number into the o location.

2(x-2)2+___ → 2(x-2)2 + -162

Simplify
2(x-2)2 + -162 → 2(x-2)2 - 162

Done
2(x - 11)(x + 7)→ 2(x-2)2 - 162
