ASTM A537 Class 2

General Product Description

The ASTM A537 specification is the Standard Specification for Pressure Vessel Plates, Heat-Treated, Carbon-Manganese-Silicon Steel used in the
applications of fusion welded pressure vessels and structures. Typical applications are pressure vessels designed for moderate and lower-tem-
perature service requiring excellent notch toughness as well as API 650 and API 620 storage tanks. Class 1 material is available as Normalized
and Class 2 is available as Quenched & Tempered plates.

inquire for thicknesses <0.375 in. down to 0.197 in. and for thicknesses >2.00 in. up to 3.60 in.
2)
Inquire for widths <96 in down to 60 in. and for widths >123 in. up to 131.9 in.
3)
Inquire for lengths <240 in. down to 73 in.

Mechanical Properties
Tensile Testing is performed in the transverse direction according to ASTM A20 requirements. The required mechanical properties are tabu-
lated below:
Grade Yield strength Tensile strength Elongation in 2”

A537 Class 2 60 80- 100 22
Charpy V-Notch Impact Toughness requirements may be ordered as a supplementary requirement (S5). A minimum Charpy V-notch impact
energy value of 40 ft-lbs [54 J] at-40°F [-40°C] in longitudinal specimens is a typical supplemental impact toughness requirement. Please inquire
for applications requiring a specified minimum impact toughness.

Chemical Composition
(Heat Analysis, wt. %, maximum unless indicated)
Meets chemical requirements of ASTM A537 Class 2/SA537 Class 2, as shown. ASTM A20 limits apply to unspecified elements.

Manganese may exceed 1.35 % on heat analysis, up to a maximum of 1.60 %, and nickel may exceed 0.25 % on heat analysis, up to a maximum of 0.50 %,
provided the heat analysis carbon equivalent (CEV) does not exceed 0.57 %.
2)
P and S are more restrictive than A537/SA537 requirements. Even lower limits for P and S are available on an inquiry basis.

Tolerances
Thickness, width, and length tolerances for A537 Class 2/SA537 Class 2 are in accordance with ASTM A20 requirements. The flatness tolerance
for as-supplied product is ½ ASTM A20.

Delivery Conditions
ASTM A537 Class 2/SA537 Class 2 is supplied in the quench and tempered condition.

Formability Properties
A537 Class 2/SA537 Class 2 exhibits excellent cold forming characteristics. Shear burrs and heat-affected zones of thermal cut edges on or near
the bend axis as well as sharp corners on edges and on gas cut or punched holes located on or adjacent to the bend axis should be removed by
grinding prior cold forming. The following recommended minimum inside bend radius, R, and die width opening, W, as a function of bending
orientation are provided:

Weldability
Welding of A537 Class 2/SA537 Class 2 shall be performed in accordance with applicable welding code. In the absence of a specified welding
code, the following minimum preheat and interpass temperatures and welding consumables are provided. Special welding consumables and
welding procedures may be required to avoid detrimental effects on the mechanical properties of the base metal. Low hydrogen practices are
strongly recommended.
