III. Discussion
Read the poem

Don’t Quit
Edgar Albert Guest
When things go wrong, as they sometimes will, When the road you’re trudging
seems all uphill, When the funds are low and the debts are high, And you want to
smile, but you have to sigh, When care is pressing you down a bit, Rest, if you
must, but don’t you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns, as every one of us sometimes learns, and
many a failure turns about, when he might have won had he stuck it out; Don’t give
up though the pace seems slow
You may succeed with another blow.

Often the goal is nearer than, it seems to a faint and faltering man, Often the
struggler has given up, when he might have captured the victor’s cup, and he
learned too late when the night slipped down, how close he was to the golden
crown.

Success is failure turned inside out the silver tint of the clouds of doubt, and you
never can tell how close you are, it may be near when it seems so far, so stick to
the fight when you’re hardest hit It’s when things seem worst that you must not quit.

What does perseverance mean?

Perseverance is the quality of those who persevere—continue to do or try to achieve something

despite difficulty or discouragement. A close synonym is persistence.

Perseverance can also refer to the act of persevering, as in Only through hard work and
perseverance will we be able to achieve our goal—it will not be easy.

The word is typically used in a positive way to refer to the quality of someone who doesn’t give up no
matter what. A person who keeps trying despite major challenges and setbacks is said to
show perseverance.

 Perseverance means not giving up. It is a continued effort to do something and keep doing it till
the end even if it’s hard.

 A perseverance child has a positive outlook on things around him.

 A child who possesses the virtue of perseverance has self – discipline because he is doing
something in spite of all the difficulties. He is being strict to himself in order to attain his goals.

THE CHARACTER TRAIT PERSEVERE

The definition for PERSEVERE is to continue in a course of action even if it is difficult or there is a
possibility for failure. What does that mean? It means that you are determined to achieve something.
If you work hard and are determined to succeed in an area that you find difficult, you are persevering!
Perseverance is also a key character trait when achieving goals.

SETTING GOALS - The definition of goal setting is the process of identifying something that you want
to accomplish and establishing measurable goals and timeframes.

A- Achievable- Do you want to help keep the environment clean? Include things in your plan that you
can do without much help from an adult.

R- Realistic- Do you want to win every soccer game? Try thinking of something more realistic. For
example, I want to score ___ goals this season.

T- Timely- Have a timeframe on when you want to complete or revisit your goal. Often times a target
date will help you persevere.
