ENERGY

QUESTIONS

1. A 1500 kg roller coaster is at the top of a track. It goes down a 50 degree

incline a distance of 50m.
a. Pick the reference point of Potential energy as the bottom of the incline
and find the potential energy at the bottom, the top and the difference
between the two.
b. Pick the reference point of Potential energy as the top of the incline and
find the potential energy at the bottom, the top, and the energy different
between the two.

2. An 80 kg skydiver leaps out of an airplane at an altitude of 3000m.

Assuming an initial velocity equal to zero and neglecting air resistance,
what would be his speed at an altitude of 1000m using the conservation
of mechanical energy?
3. A skier going over a small, 5 meter tall hill has a speed of 3 m/s at the
top, and a speed of 10 m/s at the bottom. Has their mechanical energy
been conserved?

4. A person pushes a stalled 2000 kg car from rest to a speed, doing 4000 J
of work in the process. During this time the car moves 20 m. Neglecting
friction between the car and the road, find:
a. the final speed v of the car
b. the horizontal force exerted on the car

5. A 90 kg bike and rider start at rest from the top of a 500m long hill with
a 5.0 degree incline. Assuming an average friction force of 60N, find the
speed of the biker at the bottom of the hill.
