Trade: Welding (Workshop Practices)

 Welding transformer is used as a power source for manual metal arc light, medium and
heavy structural and general purpose maintenance fabrication work
 An electrode is used to conduct current through a work piece to fuse two pieces together.
Depending upon the process, the electrode is either consumable, in the case of gas metal
arc welding or shielded metal arc welding, or non-consumable, such as in gas tungsten
arc welding.
 Electrode holder is connected to the end of the welding cable and holds the electrode. It
should be light, strong, easy to handle and should not become hot while in operation. The
jaws of the holder are insulated, offering protection from electric shock.
 Workpiece clamp is clamped to the work or welding table to complete the electric circuit.
It should be strong and durable and give a low resistance connection
 A chipping hammer is a tool used to remove welding slag from
the weld and welding spatter
 Wire brush is used for cleaning and preparing the work piece before and after welding
 Protective shield: A protective device held in the hand to shield face and throat from
injury during welding. It is fitted with a window consisting of welding glass and plain glass
 Edge Preparation: To obtain sound welds good quality edge preparation is particularly
essential, suitably beveling the edges, and carefully cleaning the faces to be welded from
dust, sand, grit, oil, grease etc.
 Bench vice is commonly used for holding the work piece. It has a hardened jaws having
serrations to ensure good grip. When the vice handle is turned the sliding jaw forces the
work piece against the fixed jaw and the vice is fixed on the working table
 Hacksaw is used for sawing all metals in the workshop except hardened steel. A hand
hacksaw consists of frame, handle, blade, prongs, tightening screw and nut
 Steel rule is one of the most useful tools in workshop for taking linear measurements of
blanks and articles to an accuracy of 1.0 to 0.5 mm
 Scriber is a slender steel tool used to scribe or mark lines on metal work pieces
 Try square is used for making and testing angles of 90° and is used for checking the
squareness of small works when extreme accuracy is not required
 Flat file is used to remove small amount of material from the surface of the metal part. It
is also used to remove sharp edges from the metal pieces
