We selected Garment industry for our Industrial tour program by thinking its great importance.
We have visited a Garment manufacturing unit. So, the following Report is prepared on “Pacific
Jeans Limited”
Introduction
Garments sector is one of the important export sectors of our country. Today readymade
garments sector not only earn maximum foreign currency but also engage a lot of unemployed
people in productive industry. "The following report is prepared on “PACIFIC JEANS Ltd." which
is the largest among locally invested garments. And it is the 2nd largest among all garments in
Bangladesh.
Pacific Jeans Limited is a world class casual wear manufacturing company known for its state of
the art production facility, extensive and unique research and development center and high
skilled human resources. At present Pacific Jeans Limited is one of the premium jeans
manufacturers exporting to over 50 countries. Pacific Jeans Limited is a 100% export oriented
garments manufacturing industry. It has started commercial production in 1996. It is a private
limited company and it is a “C” categories company that means there are 100% local investors.
It is located in Chittagong Export Processing Zone known as CEPZ, Bangladesh. Md. Nasir Uddin
is the Founder Chairman and Managing Director of this company. Pacific Jeans Ltd. is one of the
foremost manufactures of the garment industry in this country. Pacific Jeans Ltd. is a 100%
export oriented garments manufacturer. To maintain world-class quality garments Pacific Jeans
concentrates on the following factor
Mr. Nasir Uddin Founder Chairman and Managing Director of Pacific Jeans started a factory,
NZN Fashion Ltd, in 1984 with only 500 people. The factory began manufacturing jeans for an
Italian brand in the following year when there was no denim laundry in the country. The factory
used to stitch the jeans and ship them unwashed to Italy. Mr. Nasir Uddin established the first
denim laundry in Bangladesh in 1986. In 1996, Nasir set up Pacific Jeans in Chittagong Export
Processing Zone with 1,500 people. From a small garment factory established in 1984, Pacific
Jeans has now been transformed into a supreme institution for premium jeans. Since then,
Pacific Jeans have had consistent growth. In 2000, They added another production facility,
Jeans 2000 Ltd. In 2008, They expanded further with Universal Jeans Ltd. And their latest
addition in 2014 is NHT Fashion Ltd,
Pacific Jeans has seven production units employing around 29,000 people. It produces 36
million pieces of jeans a year, exporting to more than 50 countries. The group has an annual
export turnover of $360 million.

Pacific Jeans LTD is established in Plot # 14-19, Sector # 05, Chittagong Export Processing Zone,
Chittagong, Bangladesh.
Factory established at the area of 6,80,000 sft. Pacific Jeans Ltd has a production capacity of
60000 pcs. (Per day) .
Mr. Nasir Uddin Chairman of the company utilizes the assets properly so that their market
expands in EUROPE, USA & JAPAN.

Pacific Jeans Ltd has goodwill and a unique position in the international market for quality Jeans
Garments. For that reason the company enjoying great advantage for merchandising.
Pacific Jeans Ltd has no specific rules and regulation to contract with the buyers.
New buyers
Communicating process
New buyers are sometimes influenced by the fixed buyers and are not well known about the
company. So Pacific Jeans Ltd invites the group of delegated referred the specific buyers to visit
the company. After visiting, if the delegates are satisfied with the process and product of the
company, they finalized of a lump sum amount for testing the ability of the company to fulfill
the target. After trail order, the buyer orders the bulk amount. Fixed buyers are already well
known about the company, company product, and quality of the product.
Pacific Jeans Ltd regularly participates in international trade fair. Moreover Pacific Jeans Ltd
has its own display house.
The company sometimes sends delegate foreign to bring orders. Buyer house is also using as a
communicating process for the new buyers.

Production Process:
There are nine divisions in the production process. Each and every product has to pass 14
steps from store division to delivery division and 120 employees work for making one peace
Jeans. The following divisions are included in production division-
Cutting division,
Sewing division ,
Leger division,
Washing division,
“Our people are our most important asset. Safe work place gives much confidence to the
workers. Human rights, occupational health and safety are our main principle”. Pacific Jeans
is using this phrase for their HRM practice.

Employee recruitment and selection
In most of the organization the human resources are properly viewed as their most important
assets. For employee recruitment and selections, the company consider following factors to
formulate principle:

Departmental manager who decides that he needs to add to his staff or to replace someone
who is leaving the organization customarily initiates the process of searching for a new
employee. Commonly he makes a written request to the personnel department staring that he
wishes to hire someone to fill a specific vacancy. The position to be filled is defined in terms of
its job description and of its job specification (human qualifications). The hiring activity should
be integrated with the human resources plans of the company.

Selection procedure:
After recruitments, the company maintains selection procedure. PACIFIC JEANS LTD makes a
short list of applicants from among all before selection test. This type of short list is prepared as
qualification and experience. There are various types of selection test for employee selection.
These are:
Performance Appraisal:
Performance appraisal is a process for evaluating the past performance of an employee by his
supervising officer who is conversant with the employees’ job performance. There are two
types of performance appraisals.
1. Traditional performance appraisal
2. Result oriented performance appraisal
In PACIFIC JEANS LTD, result oriented performance appraisal id followed.
There is a continuous evaluation system for performance appraisal. The company has
professional appraisers to evaluate the performance. For evaluating performance, this company
uses an appraisal form to be filled by nominee’s associates and superior.
Training and Development program of Pacific Jeans Limited
There are many types of Training and Development program in Pacific Jeans Limited-
On the job training is a training that shows the employee how to perform the job and allows
him or her to do it under the trainer’s supervision.
On the job training is normally given by a senior employee or a manager like senior
merchandiser or a manager. The employee is shown how to perform the job and allowed to do
it under the trainer’s supervision.
Apprenticeship training
Apprenticeship training provides beginning worker with comprehensive training in the practical
and theoretical expect of work required in a highly skilled occupation. Apprenticeship program
combined of the job and classroom training to prepare worker for more than eight hundred
occupation such as computer operator, sewing technician. Pacific Jeans Provides Training
program at every “Saturday and Thursday” to the all lower level employees.

Findings
During my visit, I noticed some problems of PACIFIC JEANS. There are mentioned below:
Workers absenteeism and turnover (left) rate increase due to working pressure by the
floor management.
Lunch facility is not given by Pacific Jeans Limited.
No off day in every seven days for workers in Pacific Jeans Limited.
The Company is following BEPZA instruction for fixing wages. More importantly, this
minimum wages grades were published by BEPZA, which is not standard consisting with
living standard.
Pacific Jeans Limited does not deliver child care facility.
Present bonus is not matching with present situation.
Severe temperature at the workplace is a cause of turnover.
Lack of motivation program in Pacific Jeans Limited.
Recommendation
According to the findings, there is some recommendation or suggestion, which is listed below:
1. To provide lunch facility. If it not possible. Therefore Company delivers special lunch one
times in months (at the middle of a month) for motivation. It may reduce turnover and
absenteeism.
2. Pacific Jeans Limited should maintain one day off in every seven days for its workers.
(Separate holiday system may be adopted).
3. BEPZA should readjust structure of minimum wages with basis on present economic
condition.
4. Pacific Jeans Limited should introduce day care center for the workers who has a child.
5. Pacific Jeans Limited should be introduced standard target bonus.
6. Pacific Jeans Limited should provide recreational program like cultural program, picnic
etc. and comfortable transport facilities.
7. Pacific Jeans Limited should be increased present bonus 100 to 300 taka. Others RMG
companies provide present bonus 200-400 taka. Present bonus helps to reduce
absenteeism.
8. Pacific Jeans Limited should provide good ventilation / cooling system at the workplace.
9. Pacific Jeans Limited needs to offer extra facilities for their workers comparing with its
competitors.
