Activity-1: Install wireshark in your system (skip if already installed):

Activity-2: Explore wireshark tool and capture some Traffic:

Activity 3: Explore wireshark tool and find out following questions:


1. Which Interface is connected to a local network?

2. How many packets have passed through each interface?

3. ​Explore option under Capture menu


1:​Press On​ Option Ctrl+K:
In the Capture menu ​options ​dialog box will open by shortcut key ​Ctrl+K,​ which allows you
to configure interfaces and capture options.

2​: S​ tart CTRL+E


The Capture menu ​start ​by shortcut key ​CTRL+E,​immediately starts capturing packets with
the same settings as the last time.

● In Capture menu ​stop ​by short cut key ​CTRL+E,​Stops the currently running capture.
● In Capture menu ​restart ​by short cut key ​CTRL+R, ​Stops the currently running
capture and starts it again with the same options.
● In Capture menu ​capture filters, ​shows a dialog box that allows you to create and
edit capture filters. You can name filters and save them for future use.
● In Capture menu ​Refresh Interface​, Clear and recreate the interface list.
Activity 4: Learn to apply following filters on traffic:
Filter Type Examples
Protocol filter: HTTP, ARP, DNS, ICMP
IP filters host 10.43.54.65
ip.addr == 10.43.54.65
ip.src==192.168.13.1
ip.dst==192.168.13.2
Port filter port 21,
not port 443,
tcpsrc port 443,
tcpdst port
Combinations Join OR and AND to combine multiple filters
like ip.src==192.168.13.1 and
ip.dst==192.168.13.2
