Content Focus: Solving Problems on Properties of Parallelogram.

Properties of Parallelogram

1. In a parallelogram, any two opposite sides are congruent.

2. In a parallelogram, any two opposite angles are congruent.
3. In a parallelogram, any two consecutive angles are supplementary.
4. The diagonals of a parallelogram bisect each other.
5. A diagonal of a parallelogram forms two congruent triangles.

Examples:

1. Use the parallelogram below to find the length of segment MA and

segment HT and the measure of angle M and angle A.

Solution:

Since the opposite sides of a parallelogram are congruent, the length of

segment MA is equal to the length of segment HT.
5x - 9 = 2x + 3
5x - 2x = 3 + 9
3x = 12
x=4
MA = HT = 5x - 9 = 5(4) - 9 = 20 - 9 = 11

1
Since the two consecutive angles of a parallelogram are supplementary, the
sum of the measures of ∠M and ∠A is 180°.
m∠M +m∠A = 180°
(2a – 15) + (a + 30) = 180
3a + 15 = 180
3a = 165
a = 55
m∠M = (2a – 15)° = 2(55) – 15 = 110 – 15 = 95°
m∠A = (a + 30)° = 55 + 30 = 85 °

2. Use the parallelogram below to find the length of segment AC and segment
BD.

Solution:

Since the diagonals of a parallelogram bisect each other, we get the following
results:
The length of segment MO is equal to the length of segment TO
The length of segment HO is equal to the length of segment AO

2x - 3 = x + 6 8y – 15 = 5y
2x – x = 6 + 3 8y – 5y = 15
x=9 3y = 15
MO = TO = 9 + 3 = 12 y=5
HO = AO = 5(5) = 25

DIRECTIONS: Refer to the given parallelogram HOPE at the right and

answer the following.

PE = (3x + 4) cm and HE = (2y – 3) cm.
a. What is the value of x?
b. What is the value of y?
c. How long is HO?
d. How long is OP?

2
2. Given: m∠EPO = (4a + 18)°, m∠HEP = (2a – 12)°
a. What is the value of a?
b. What is the m∠HEP?
c. What is the m∠EPO?

3. Given: m∠EHO = (5b - 34)°, m∠OPE = (2b + 59)°

a. What is the value of b?
b. What is the m∠EHO?
c. What is the m∠OPE?
