Gradient Mapping an Image

Figure 1 shows the original image I am going to use in this tutorial.

I am going to use a Gradient Map Adjustment Layer to add color to the


feather. Gradient Mapping applies a gradient across the image mapping the colors
onto the feather while preserving the highlights and shadows of the image.

Figure 2 shows the Layer palette with the New Adjustment Layer selected, notice
that Gradient Map is highlighted in the layer type box.

Figure 3 shows the new Adjustment Layer popout dialog box. this box allows you to
rename the Adjustment Layer.

Figure 4 shows the Gradient Map popout dialog box when it opens. the grayscale
black to white gradient is selected by default. If you click on the gradient shown
in the dialog box, the gradient editor popout menu appears. See Figure 5 on
the next page

Figure 5 shows the Gradient Editor popout dialog box. In this box you can
choose a different gradient and set transparency and color Stops to modify
the gradient chosen.

Figure 6 shows the Gradient Editor popout dialog box. with a noise Gradient
selected. You can also click on the randomize and the Gradient Editor will
step through different color combinations for the gradient map.

Figure 7 shows the Gradient Editor popout dialog box. I randomized the
gradient and clicked on Add Transparency, I set the Roughness to 50%.
I can also manipulate the color sliders which will change the color of the
gradient.

Figure 8 shows the Gradient Map popout dialog box that appears when I
click OK in the gradient editor popout menu. . To apply the gradient map
to my image I click OK.

codes showing.

selected (highlighted). Notice that the layer has been color coded and also the
Layer blend Mode has been changed from Normal to color.
