Q: Will the world

BUILD YOUR NETWORK

deglobalize
post-COVID-19?
A: In 2020, trade is expected to fall
by up to one-third due to the
COVID-19 shock, and calls for export
controls, reshoring, and isolationism in key
economies during the pandemic have led
some to suggest that the era of economic
integration is over. Understanding the
economics of globalization, from cross-
border trade in goods to immigration,
is key to crafting effective policies to
maximize the benefits of an integrated
world while minimizing its costs.

MICHAEL G. PLUMMER (USA) is Eni Professor

economic relationships and on Asian economic

Q: Will COVID-19
affect climate
BUILD YOUR NETWORK

change?
A: Just as climate activists were
gearing up for large-scale protests
in March 2020, governments banned
mass demonstrations to minimize
infection. Activists changed tactics and
moved online with webinars and Twitter
strikes. They urged governments to
adopt green stimulus policies and shift
away from fossil fuels while tackling the
disastrous effects of COVID-19. We are
yet to see what effect they will have.

NINA HALL (New Zealand) teaches theories of

international relations and transnational advocacy.
She currently works with a global network of digital

campaigning. She is an expert on international

Q: Why should we

BUILD YOUR NETWORK

care about the
Middle East?
A: After the Arab uprisings,
the Middle East seems to have
reverted to the old regional order,
marked by authoritarianism and
persisting conflicts. In reality, the
region is going through an uncertain
period of transition. For Europe, the
Middle East matters because it is
geographically close. As shown by
the refugee crisis that fueled the rise
of right-wing populism in Europe,
developments there are bound to
impact on the old continent.

Q: Does history
BUILD YOUR NETWORK

matter in
contemporary
politics?
A: Major political events have
multiple causes that almost
always are deeply rooted in the past.
An historical approach to the study
of contemporary politics is ultimately
about learning to construct multi-causal
accounts of why political developments
occurred in the past—but also about
transferring this skill when we analyze the
present. A practitioner of international
relations without training in history lacks
something important.

Professor MARK GILBERT (U.K.) is a political

of Western European democracies and European

look like?
A: We have more experience in modern
Europe with integration than
disintegration. Since the end of the Second
World War, Europeans have come together
dramatically. The European Union and the
euro are remarkable achievements. But
it has not always been easy. Substantial
differences have emerged both within and

and reconciling those differences has
become the most important challenge
Europeans have to face.
