Description and Operation: Component Maintenance Manual
Description and Operation: Component Maintenance Manual
1. General
The air conditioning panel assembly (non APU option) (referred to as ’the non APU panel assembly’)
has the De Havilland Canada part number 82410909−015.
The air conditioning panel assembly (APU option) (referred to as ’the APU panel assembly’) has the De
Havilland Canada part number 82410909−009, −013, −017, −963, −967, −IS4Q2100020 or 8Z6407−
051.
The panel assembly is installed in the overhead console in the flight compartment of the aircraft.
2. Description
Refer to Figure 1 and to Figure 2.
A. Both the non APU panel assembly and the APU panel assembly contain five toggle switches, two
rotary switches, two potentiometers and one temperature indicator. The switches and
potentiometers are identified as follows:
– A two−pole toggle switch identified as RECIRC with selections of OFF or RECIRC
– A four−pole toggle switch identified as BLEED 1 with selections of OFF or BLEED
– A four−pole toggle switch identified as BLEED 2 with selections of OFF or BLEED
– Two one−pole toggle switches identified as PACKS, each with selections of OFF, MANUAL or
AUTO
– A rotary switch identified as BLEED with selections of MIN, NORM and MAX
– A rotary switch identified as GAUGE with selections of CAB DUCT, CABIN or FC DUCT
– A potentiometer switch identified as CABIN with selections labelled F/A, COOL and WARM
– A potentiometer switch identified as FLT COMP with selections labelled COOL and WARM.
NOTE: The reworked APU panel assembly with the part number 82410909−IS4Q2100020 has
white caps installed on the BLEED 1 and BLEED 2 toggle switches. These white caps give
easy identification of the toggle switches for better flight crew cockpit management.
B. Both the non APU panel assembly and the APU panel assembly also include the items that follow:
– A plexi−glass facing panel
– A backing panel
– A connector mounting plate
– Three connectors (two for the panel and one for the integral lighting)
– Three spacers
– A cover assembly
– Associated wiring

– Attachment hardware.
NOTE: The difference between the non APU panel assembly and the APU panel assembly is that
the APU panel assembly has additional wiring installed between the two BLEED (1 and 2)
toggle switches and connector J100.
The panel assembly with the part number 82410909−013, −015, −017, or −IS4Q2100020
also incorporate Modsum 4−126262 which installs three resistors to decrease the total
circuit wiring resistance. This gives a more accurate temperature reading on the GAUGE
rotary switch.
3. Operation
A. RECIRC Toggle Switch
The RECIRC toggle switch when selected to RECIRC, sets the operation of the recirculation fan to
on. The fan starts at slow speed to reduce initial current draw then changes to high speed. The fan
operates at slow speed during single pack operation.
B. BLEED 1 and 2 Toggle Switches
The air conditioning system is started by selecting the toggle switches to BLEED 1 and/or BLEED 2
(or the BL AIR switchlight on the APU CONTROL Panel). BLEED 1 takes bleed air from the left
engine for use in the ECS (Environmental Control System) and BLEED 2 takes bleed air from the
right engine.
C. BLEED Rotary Switch
The air conditioning pack conditions the bleed air to the proper temperature and humidity and
delivers it to the air distribution system. With the air conditioning PACKS switch set to AUTO, the
bleed air comes from the left and right engines. The pack inlet pressure and temperature sensor
signals are supplied to the digital channels of the ECU (Electronic Control Unit) and the digital
channels modulate the pack flow control and shutoff valve to provide either minimum, normal or
maximum pack flow. The BLEED rotary switch can be set to either MIN, NORM or MAX to set the
desired flow rate.
D. GAUGE Rotary Switch and Temperature Indicator
The GAUGE rotary switch selections are CAB DUCT (cabin supply duct), CABIN and FC DUCT
(flight compartment duct). A zone temperature sensor in the cabin compartment is used as an
indication sensor that supplies the CABIN temperature signal to the temperature indicator. The zone
supply indication sensors located in the cabin supply ducts and flight compartment supply ducts
near the zone supply temperature sensors send the supply duct temperature signals to the
temperature indicator for the CAB DUCT and FC DUCT respectively. The difference between the air
conditioning panels is the introduction of Modsum 4−126262 which has three resistors installed to
decrease the total circuit wiring resistance to produce a more accurate temperature reading on the
GAUGE rotary switch.
E. PACKS Toggle Switches

With the PACKS switch set to AUTO, the digital channel in control opens the pack flow control and
shutoff valve and the turbine shutoff valves. With the PACKS set to MAN, or if the digital channel
fails, the analog channel supplies temperature control. The analog channel uses the settings of the
CABIN and FLT COMP temperature selectors as a reference for controlling the temperature.
F. CABIN and FLT COMP Potentiometer Switches
The CABIN temperature selector has a switch at the full counter−clockwise position labelled F/A
which when selected enables the flight attendant’s control panel. The ENABLED light on the flight
attendant’s control panel illuminates to indicate that the flight attendant has control of the cabin
temperature selection. The temperature indicator on the panel receives its signal from the cabin
zone temperature indication sensor.
Temperature control starts with selecting the desired temperature range (COOL to WARM); the ECU
monitors the temperature sensors and switches located throughout the aircraft. The ECU then
operates the appropriate valves to maintain the selected temperature setting.
