Faculty:  Science
Due Date:
Teacher: Ms. Hill, Dr. Knowles
Submission type: Scientific Report
Task Context:
●Demonstrating the effect of greenhouse gases on temperature changes in a closed system

Task Outline/Description:
You will need to collect and represent data relating to how the inclusion of CO 2 in a closed system
affects temperature changes. This is a scientific report using data collected in class.

What will I be demonstrating that I have learned?

By analysing the data you collect and linking it to scientific concepts in geology and physics.

What do I need to produce?

●Introduced based on scaffolded questions provided
●Practical report

Achievement Standard Excellent High Satisfactory Partial Limited

Describes and analyses interactions and

cycles within and between Earth's
spheres

Identifies alternative explanations for

findings when analysing data, selecting
evidence and developing and justifying
conclusions, and explains any sources of
uncertainty

Constructs evidence-based arguments

and selects appropriate representations

ideas for specific purposes

Part 1: Introduction
Use the information provided to answer the questions below.
Part 2: Practical Investigation
This task involves measuring the effects of greenhouse gases. You will place two
bottles under heat lamps and record the temperature changes at 1-minute intervals.
One will have more carbon dioxide provided by a dissolving tablet in the water which
releases gas. Make sure that the bottles are the same distance from the heat lamp to
ensure accurate results.

Discussion
1. Include a graph of your results

2. Describe the trends shown by the graph and compare the results.
From the minute the experiment started to the ten minute mark the control bottle had
started to increase in temperature from what started as twenty-six degrees, it
increased to twenty-eight, While the Co2 bottle stared at twenty-eight degrees, and
over the course of ten minutes dropped to twenty-six.
3. Explain why these trends occurred.
The trends occurred due to the use of three Alka Seltzer tablets, which is a Citric acid
+ bicarbonate soda mix that reacts upon entering water, however this didn’t produce
accurate results due to a systematic error, involving the heat lamps used to heat the
air inside of the bottles. The heat lamps did not produce enough heat to allow a larger
temperature change to occur.
4. What is the link between the greenhouse effect and climate change?
