Lesson Plan: Night Sky

Centre/Activity: Night Sky Art Activity


Theme: Nature -- the sky
Target Age Group: SK to grade 1 (5-6/7yrs)
Time Required: 20 mins to set up + about 45-105 mins

Description of the Activity and How you Envision the Children Using the Activity:
● Child creates a night sky/northern lights mixed media art piece
● Learns about nature -- northern lights

Materials Needed:
● Black paint
● White paint
● Coloured chalk
● Black sheet of paper (construction)
● Paintbrush
● Scissors
● Clothes cover-ups
● Example of finished product
● Paper towels
● Wet wipes

Directions for Set-Up: Describe in detail, exactly how you would want your materials and
activities set up in a daycare or classroom setting.
● One main table set up with materials
● Separate tables as workstations
● Materials are placed in piles and organized by colour
● Clothes cover-ups placed on chairs for each child

Instructions Used During Activity: Include a step by step process of how you would instruct
the children throughout the process of this activity. Include any questions to ask when
working with the children to guide their learning (a minimum of 3 questions).
1. Prepare materials and place as instructed above
2. Explain what northern lights are (maybe a small presentation or video), basic instructions and
what the craft is: We are making a mix media piece of northern lights, Northern lights are...
3. Showcase your example and perhaps a video of how you made it (step by step)
4. Explain where materials are situated
5. Highlight basic safety: hold scissors properly, no running, take turns, patience, etc
6. Have kids but on clothes cover-ups
7. Let students come up in groups to gather materials
8. Kids create craft
9. Walk around offering guidance with cutting, painting, etc: Do you need help glueing? Would you
like me to pour the paint? Do you need me to clarify the instructions? Do you need any help?
